The University Library
is a culture within a culture, a subset of a larger community within which
there is an array of values, group and organizational norms and expectations.
The Library as an organizational culture is a dynamic setting where knowledge
and patterns of understanding are developed by users and staff.
The Library Diversity Committee should adapt and respond to this changing culture through observation, reflection and action. As our diversity program matures, we have come to realize that self-reflection is a necessary part of our changing needs; redefining our leadership and advisory roles, as well as internal committee expectations and responsibilities, are a vital part of strengthening our efforts. We also see the need for greater visibility among our constituents, a clearer statement of our vision, and a push towards broader understanding of and response to our constituents’ needs and expectations. Our goals are a direct response to these concerns, and the developing objectives and plan of action will assist us in our mission of promoting understanding in areas of diversity.
