Requesting and Using Collection Material

You must be a registered user to request and use material held by the Special Collections Library. This one-time registration process includes the creation of a Special Collections Request Account. With that online account, you can

  • submit requests for collection material online;
  • submit requests in advance of a visit to the Special Collections Library;
  • track the status of submitted requests; and
  • access detailed information about past requests.

Registration means that you acknowledge and agree to the terms and conditions governing access to and use of Special Collections Library material.

Registration For Users Affiliated with the University of Michigan

Go to Special Collections Request Account. Log in using your uniqname and your UMICH Kerberos password. You will be asked to acknowledge and agree to the terms and conditions governing access to and use of Special Collections Library material. Your Special Collections Request Account will be created when you accept the terms.

Registration For Users Not Affiliated with the University of Michigan

Before using material held by the Special Collections Library you must first create a U-M guest computing account -- a Friend account -- and a Special Collections Request Account.

This is a two-part process:

  1. Follow these instructions for creating a Friend account.

  2. Then go to Special Collections Request Account:
    • Log in using the email address and password associated with your newly created Friend account.
    • You will be asked to acknowledge and agree to the terms and conditions governing access to and use of Special Collections Library material.
    • When you accept the terms, you will be directed to a registration form. Your Special Collections Request Account will be created when you complete and submit the form.
