The University of Michigan Special Collections Library is offering for sale by closed bid more than 300 lots consisting of duplicate books and other material accumulated over the course of several decades. The material offered for sale is representative of the collecting strengths of the Special Collections Library and includes books, serials, and pamphlets in the following broad subject areas: American Literature, English Literature, Children’s Literature, History, Mathematics, Social Movements, and Transportation History.

Much of the material offered for sale came from donations of entire private collections that inevitably contained titles already held. Some of the material is “ex library,” meaning that it was withdrawn from the collection because a better copy, usually received as a gift, became available. We are sincerely grateful to our many donors who recognized that even in giving us duplicates, they could significantly benefit the University of Michigan Library. Proceeds from this sale will be used to support future acquisitions for the Special Collections Library.

Bidders may view lots by appointment only on campus between Monday March 14 and Tuesday March 22, 2011. All lots will be sold to the highest biddern the basis of official bid sheets received by 5:00 pm EDT on Friday, March 25.
