Chronology: Library Services
and Social Work
- 1883 - Library
building opened on the University of Michigan campus. Declared unsafe
in 1915.
- 1916 - Construction
of new general library begun in 1916 on site of old library.
- 1920 - General
Library opened.
- 1921 - Undergraduate
curriculum in social work authorized by the Regents of the University of Michigan.
Arthur E. Wood, Chair. Library services provided by the General
Library.
- 1925 - University granted
membership into the Association of Schools of Professional Social Work.
- 1927 - Certificate in
social work authorized by the Regents, awarded to students completing the
undergraduate social work curriculum and one year's work experience.
- 1935 - Institute of the
Health and Social Sciences established, including the graduate level Curriculum
in Social Work. Later renamed Institute of Public and Social Administration.
Located at Rackham Center in Detroit. Robert Kelso, Director of Curriculum
in Social Work. Three full-time faculty: Robert Kelso, Eleanor Cranefield,
and Arthur Dunham. One half-time faculty, William Haber. Seventeen special
lecturers.
- 1935 - 1937 Library services
provided by Detroit Council of Social Agencies library, maintained by the
Council and the Detroit Public Library. Located in annex adjoining the Institute.
- 1938 - Collections of
Detroit Council of Social Agencies library transferred to Detroit Public Library.
The Curriculum subsequently purchased approximately 1000 books from funds
appropriated from the University general fund. No continuing funds appropriated.
- 1941 (Feb) - UM Detroit
Library opened in the Rackham
Educational Memorial Building. Mrs. E. G. Mainwood, librarian. Library
services provided to the Curriculum in Social Work, including cataloging of
the curriculum's collection.
- 1945 - Institute of Social
Work formed from the restructuring of the Institute of Public and Social Administration.
Located at Rackham Center in Detroit. Library services provided by UM Detroit
Library, Miss Grace C. Beebe, librarian.
- 1945-1950 Robert Kelso,
Director. Five full-time faculty: Robert Kelso, Eleanor Cranefield, Arthur
Dunham, Ralph Fletcher, Clarice Freud. Eight lecturers.
- 1950-1951 Arthur Dunham,
Acting Director; appointed upon retirement of Robert Kelso.
- 1951 (March) - School
of Social Work established with Fedele Fauri as dean.
- 1951 (September) - Headquarters
of School moved from Detroit to 820 E. Washington, Ann Arbor. Basic program
also continues in Detroit. Library services for Ann Arbor campus provided
by the General Library. Open-shelf reserves provided in first floor study
hall of General Library with oversight of a trained librarian. Library services
for Detroit curriculum provided by UM Detroit Library, Mrs. Erma B. Golden,
librarian.
- 1952 (October 8) - Social
Science Library opened in Mason Hall with 20,981 volumes. Collection geared
toward departments of Psychology, Journalism and the School of Social Work.
Seating in reading room for over 100 readers.
- 1956 - Russell Sage Foundation
grants $250,000 to the University to be spent over a 5-year period to facilitate
the development of a doctoral program in social work and social science.
- 1957 (April) - School
of Social Work moves to Frieze Building
from 820 E. Washington.
- 1957 - Henry
J. Meyer appointed to administer new doctoral program, through the Horace
H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. First doctorate granted to Phillip
Fellin (1962).
- 1958 (January 16) - Undergraduate
Library opened.
- 1958 (April) - Social
Work Library established in 2068 Frieze
Building. Floor plan designed by David Maxwell of the University Library.
4500 books transferred from the Social Science Library. Edward Weber, librarian.
- 1958 (August) - Social
Science Library closed. 2900 titles transferred to Social Work Library.
- 1959 - Mrs. H. Inada
appointed Social Work librarian.
- 1960 (September) - William
Morgan appointed Social Work librarian, half-time.
- 1962 (January) - Mrs.
Pearl C. Chandler appointed Social Work librarian, half-time.
- 1966 (June)- Social Work
Library relocated to 1548 Frieze Building (720
E. Huron entrance). Mrs. Pearl C. Chandler, librarian.
- 1969 - First full-time
professional librarian appointed, Mrs. Christina Whitehurst Neal, replacing
Pearl Chandler.
- 1970 (July)-Robert
Vinter named Acting Dean of School of Social Work upon the appointment
of Fedele Fauri as University Vice-President for State Relations.
- 1971 (May) - Phillip
Fellin appointed Dean of the School of Social Work.
- 1976 - 2547 Frieze furnished
as an third reading room of the Social Work Library, with seating space for
30. Funding from the Winkelman family, in memory of Leon and Josephine Winkelman.
- 1981 -Harold
Johnson appointed Dean of the School of Social Work.
- 1982 (July) - Online
searching through BRS and Dialogue available (fee-based service).
- 1986 (May) - Lift installed
in Social Work Library to provide access to persons with disabilities, at
a cost of $50,000. Asbestos removal necessary.
- 1988 - Planning begins
for new School of Social Work. Jesse
Gordon appointed by Dean Johnson to coordinate planning.
- 1988 - Mirlyn (Michigan
Research Library Network) implemented. Two workstations made available to
the public for access to the online catalog.
- 1989 (June 30) - Christina
W. Neal, Social Work librarian, retired.
- 1989 - Darlene
Nichols appointed acting librarian, half-time.
- 1989 (December) - Mirlyn
online circulation implemented. Patrons no longer required to sign out books
by writing name and contact information on cards.
- 1990 (October) - Comprehensive
Information Resource Center Program Statement, prepared by Ad Hoc Committee
on the "Library of the Future" issued. Provided recommendations for library
space and services for the new School of Social Work.
- 1990 - 1997
Darlene Nichols appointed librarian, half-time.
- 1992 (February) - Paula
Allen-Meares appointed Dean of the School of Social Work; reappointed
June 1997.
- 1995 - Groundbreaking
ceremony for new School of Social Work building. (Augusts 3).
- 1998 - Social Work Library
relocated to the B700 School
of Social Work Building (January 7).
- 1998 (July)-2005 (April) Karen
Reiman-Sendi appointed Social Work Librarian and Manager, Comprehensive
Information Resource Center.
- 1998 (September 25) -
Dedication of new School of Social Work.
- 2000 (December)- Sally Haines appointed Public Services Librarian (part-time) .
- 2004 (July)- Milryn software migrates from NOTIS to Aleph
- 2004 (October)- Barbara Beaton appointed Public Services Librarian (part-time).
