I am a guest at the Social Work Library. What library resources can I use?
As a visitor, all of the library's collections (periodicals, books, and special collections) are available for your use while you are in the library. If you are a social work professional and are new to using the Social Work Library web page, Resources for Social Work Professionals Not Affiliated with U-M could be helpful to you.
You may also use the computers that are marked Library Research Only; log on by following the guest prompts. These computers will allow you access to the University of Michigan library's catalog, electronic resources, the Internet, and basic Microsoft Office programs. Unfortunately, if you do not have a U-M uniqname and password, you will not be able to print from these computers. The library has photocopiers that are available for you to use. The cost is $.10 per copy and a copier card is required.
You also have access to assistance from library staff. If you have any research questions, please feel free to ask at the library's service desk.
Visitors may be eligible for borrowing privileges. For more information, please contact Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library Circulation Services at 734/764-0400 or point your web browser to: http://www.lib.umich.edu/circ/guestborrowing.html
Note: For directions and information about parking near the library point your web browser to: http://www.lib.umich.edu/socwork/parking.html
Can I bring food or drink into the library?
Food is not allowed . We need to preserve the collection for your use and the use of future researchers. Food can leave crumbs that will attract insects, which damage the library's books. Since spilled liquids can damage both books and computers, beverages are allowed in covered containers only. If you violate this policy, library staff may ask you to leave the library. For details, please read our food/drink policy.
Can I renew my books using Mirlyn?
YES. You can renew your books using Mirlyn by doing the following steps:
To renew all of your books click on the "Renew All" button. After you have done this you should see a message displayed towards the top of the page that will tell you if the books were renewed. You should also see a list of the items that you have checked out and their new due dates.
To renew individual library materials do the following:
After you have done this, you should see a message displayed towards the top of the page that will tell you if the book was renewed. You should also see a list of the items that you have checked out including the renewed item with the new due date.
Can I return books from other U-M libraries here?
YES. We will check them in and then send them to the appropriate library, including books borrowed through the Interlibrary Loan service. The Law Library and Kresge Business Library are not part of the University Library system; items from those libraries should be returned directly to them.
How can I pay my overdue fines? Do I need to pay them right away? Will I still be able to check out library books?
You do not need to pay any fines at the time you return the book. Unless you have unusually large fines or have not returned a recalled book, you should still be able to check out U-M library books. (However, if you are a student, you must pay any fines before you graduate.) You may pay library fines with a check at the Social Work Library, or with cash at either the Graduate Library or the Shapiro Undergraduate Library circulation desks. Please be aware that the Shapiro Undergraduate Library only accepts cash between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday. At any other times you must pay by check.
I looked for a journal issue by call number in book stacks, but I can’t find it on the shelf.
Each library has its own way of shelving journals. In the Social Work Library, journals are shelved separately from the books. Journals are kept at the back of the library, near the photocopiers and the group study rooms. Bound journals, which are usually older, are together on tall bookshelves. (On the map, these shelves are near room B794 and group study room B792, on the left side.) Current journals, which tend to be newer and have not yet been bound, are on display shelving to the left of the bound journals. (On the map, this is the corner on the lower left side.) All journals are arranged alphabetically by journal title; a call number is not required to find the journal you need in the Social Work Library.
What journals does the Social Work Library have? Are any of them available full-text?
The Social Work Library's current journals page lists the journals the library currently receives and those journals that are available full-text. The library also has issues of journals that are not published anymore, as well as of journals that have changed their titles. Therefore, if you know that you need a particular journal, please run a title search in the Mirlyn catalog to see which library has what you're looking for.
What does it mean when Mirlyn lists the location of a book as "Social Work - Reserves - Ask at Circ."? What’s the difference between Social Work Library Reserves and University Reserves?
Many professors place books, articles, and coursepacks on reserve to make sure that they are available to all the students in a class. Reserve materials may be checked out for 4 hours at a time. You can request them at the Service Desk. Please return Social Work Reserve books to the Social Work Library only; it is best to hand them directly to Service Desk staff to ensure that the book is checked in as soon as possible. (An overdue reserve book will accumulate an $1 per hour fine, 24 hours a day, until the book has been returned.) For more information, please see the Social Work Reserves page.
University Reserves is similar, although it usually does not include books on reserve for School of Social Work classes. University Reserves can be found on the 1 st floor of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library, behind the circulation desk. For more information, please see the University Reserves page.
I need a book/journal issue not owned by the Social Work Library; what can I do? What if it's not owned by the U-M Library system at all?
If the item is owned by another U-M library and can circulate, you may go there and check it out. You can also have regularly circulating materials (items not on reserve or with another special status) sent from most campus libraries to the campus library of your choice through Library to Library Delivery service.
You can also use the 7-FAST delivery service. For a small fee you can have an article copied for you or a book retrieved for you from any of the U-M libraries.
If the item is not owned by the U-M libraries at all, or is officially missing or at the bindery, you can try Interlibrary Loan. Through this service, you may borrow the book or obtain a copy of a journal article from another university's library. According to Interlibrary Loan, it takes an average of 4 days for copies of articles and 7 days for books, for borrowers to receive the items they requested, if the items are available for loan. Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan should be returned directly to the Interlibrary Loan office (106 Hatcher Graduate Library North).
Can I view a video at the library?
Yes. There is a monitor, VCR, and DVD player in one group study room (rm. B772) in the library, for SSW student use only. Videos must be class-related or assigned. You must reserve the group study room in advance (please see the group study room policy for details). Most of the computers also have DVD drives. Bring your own headphones or borrow them from the service desk.
Can I practice a PowerPoint presentation at the library?
Yes. There is a monitor and a computer in one group study room (rm. B792) in the library, for SSW student use only. The computer is to be used only for PowerPoint presentations. You must reserve the group study room in advance (please see the group study room policy for details).
I recently lost a personal object in the Social Work Library; what can I do?
Please ask at the library's Service Desk. Lost items are kept there for approximately one week before being taken to the building's main lost-and-found in the Office of Student Services, in room 1748 SSWB. Valuable items will be taken to the OSS the same day they are found. From there, the OSS will send unclaimed items to the U-M Dept. of Public Safety. The DPS contact phone number for unclaimed items from the lost-and-found at both the Social Work Library and the Office of Student Services is (734) 763-3434; you can call this office from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M., Monday through Friday.

What is a recall notice?
A recall notice is a notice that is sent to library patrons when items that have been checked out to them are requested for use by someone else, or are needed for course reserves. Everyone is guaranteed a loan period of three weeks for general circulating items, unless a rush recall request has been placed on the item, so that it can be placed on course reserve. A new due date may be generated as a result of a recall. You must return recalled items by their due date. Failure to do this will result in fines of $2.00 per day per item and the suspension of borrowing privileges. For more information please see "Placing Holds and Recalls"
To place a recall on a book see the instructions for placing holds and recalls on materials from other libraries (above).
