Social Work Library: Library Subject Browsing Guide

Library Subject Browsing Guide

Scope note: Below is a brief guide to some of the subject areas represented in the Social Work Library's collections. This guide presents an alphabetical list of broad topics with the appropriate call number stem. Use these number stems to browse the book shelves. Please remember that this is not a comprehensive listing of the library's collections. Use the catalog, Mirlyn, to determine specific subjects or items stored in the Social Work Library or other campus libraries.

The subjects listed here are valid subject terms which can be used in Mirlyn "Subject begins with . . ." searching. Some of the topics listed have links to selective bibliographies prepared by library staff. Additional information on the call number system is available below.

Call Numbers in the Social Work Library

Call numbers are used as a shelf address for library materials, similar to a street address. A typical call number combines letters and numbers, and looks like this:

HV 11 .S45 1996

The numbering system used in the Social Work Library is based on a classification system developed at the Library of Congress. It organizes the library materials into branches of knowledge or common subject groupings, as well as defines the shelf address for individual items. For example, items dealing with the subject of "social work education" are grouped together as:

H (social sciences)
V (social pathology, social & public welfare, criminology)
11 (social work education - general works)

Books in the Social Work Library are shelved using call numbers, as described above, both in an alphabetical arrangement and in numeric order. Hence, books with a BF call number are shelved before books with HF call numbers, and HF's are before HV books. The numbers after the initial letters are in basic numeric order -- 11 comes before 12, 100 follows 99, etc. The next segment or section of the call number is letters and numbers, and is filed differently. These are sorted first by the letter and then by the number as a decimal. Thus, HV 11 .B14 comes before HV 11 .B144 on the shelf, and HV 11 .S1 comes before HV 11.2 .A1. Other sections of a call number may include additional letter/number combinations or dates.

When using Mirlyn, the library location, call number, and availability are indicated. The information is displayed like this:

LOCATION COLLECTION CALL NUMBER STATUS/DUE DATE
SOCIAL WORK   HV 11 .S45 On shelf

You need to jot down the location (which could include specific collection locations) and the call number in order to find the material. If an item is not available for use because another person has borrowed it, the STATUS/DUE DATE message will indicate a date when the item is due back in the Social Work Library.

Periodicals in the Social Work Library are shelved by journal title, not by call number. The information displayed in Mirlyn might look like this:
LOCATION COLLECTION CALL NUMBER VOL.:ISSUE STATUS/DUE DATE
SOCIAL WORK Unbound Periodicals HQ 1 .A58 v.28, n.1 On shelf/No Loan

If you have questions about how to find materials in the Social Work Library, please ask the library staff for assistance.
