Scope note: This research guide highlights some of the resources available in the Social Work Library, on campus, and on the web concerned with substance abuse. This guide is not comprehensive, but is intended to provide a starting point for research in this area. Contact library staff at social.work.library@umich.edu for assistance in locating additional resources.

Locating Resources through Mirlyn

To locate books (and other materials such as videos) in the University Library's collections, try any of the following terms in Mirlyn (the library’s online catalog) using either the"words anywhere" or “subject words” search from the pull-down menu:

Tips:

Choose "advanced search" in Mirlyn to limit results to special formats such as video, electronic, etc.

Once you've found some promising titles, you can expand your search by searching for other words from subject headings, title, and/or works by the same author.

Looking for journal articles or other types of research materials? Try any or all of the following databases, depending on your focus.  Most include substantial access to electronic full text. Click on U-M Restricted Database to link to full text of the article.

Search Tips: Many different terms are associated with substance abuse -- explore different approaches or synonyms, e.g. substance, alcohol, or drug abuse, or specify drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, etc. and/or specific populations, e.g. youth, minorities, women, to find the best strategy for each database you use.

Child Abuse, Welfare and Adoption U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
References books, journal articles, papers, federal grant reports and descriptions of programs and treatment related to the maltreatment, safety and well-being of children from 1965 to the present, including substance abuse in families, juvenile substance abuse, etc.. A publicly available version of this database can be found at the National Child Welfare Information Gateway at http://www.childwelfare.gov/

Criminal Justice Abstracts (Guide Available) U-M Restricted Database
Indexes major journals, book chapters, and selected government reports in criminology and related disciplines. 

ERIC
Provides access to journal articles and many other types of publications in the field of education.  

ETOH (Alcohol & Alcohol Problems Science Database)
As this database is focused on alcohol, rather than use it as a search term, use terms that focus your search, such as "treatment" or "prevention" or "youth", etc.

Family & Society Studies Worldwide U-M Restricted Database
Directed at professionals in all fields of social work, social science and family practice; includes both scholarly and more popular treatments.

LegalTracrestricted journal symbol
A good source for articles on substance abuse published in legal and criminology journals; many of the journals are available electronically via the Law Library.

MEDLINE U-M Restricted Database
The premier source identifying biomedical literature, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, and areas of allied health, biological and physical sciences.

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service Bulletin) U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
Indexes journal articles, books, government and international agency documents, statistical, research and conference reports, on public affairs, public and social policy worldwide. 

PsycInfo U-M Restricted Database
Extensive coverage of scholarly articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations in psychology and related disciplines, produced by the American Psychological Association (APA).   

Social Services Abstracts U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
An index of social services literature, including social welfare, policy and community development.  Abstracts cover journal articles, dissertations and book reviews.

Social Work Abstracts U-M Restricted Database
Produced by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), this database covers journal articles on a wide range of social issues.

Sociological Abstracts U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
Covers scholarly sociological literature; of potential use to researchers looking for current and historical trends related to social and public health issues, among others.

American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry
This professional organization exists to support access and excellence in addiction psychiatry as well as public awareness, continuing education for professionals and the encouragement and dissemination of research on all facets of addiction.

American Medical Association Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse
Contains information on AMA policies about alcohol, youth and alcohol, alanon/alateen, drug resources and links.
Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA)
Supports a coalition of community organizations in their efforts to create and maintain safe, drug-free communities.
National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors
This is the "largest membership organization serving addiction counselors, educators and other addiction-focused health care professionals, who specialize in addiction prevention, treatment and education."
National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse
A Columbia University based think-tank aimed at informing the public and assessing effective substance abuse treatments and legislation.

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information
This site provides alcohol and drug facts, statistics and research summaries, catalog of publications, conference calendar, and links to additional web sites.

National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence
A good site for definitions and statistics on alcohol, as well as
awareness activities.

National Inhalent Prevention Coalition
Serves as a referral/information clearinghouse multifaceted awareness and prevention campaigns to educate youth and adults about the dangerous effects of varous inhalents.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Covers various topics related to alcohol, including FAQs on alcohol abuse.

Rutgers University Center of Alcohol Studies
This center is a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to acquisition and dissemination of knowledge on psychoactive substance use and related phenomena with primary emphasis on alcohol use and consequences.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
This component of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services has statistics and fact sheets on substance abuse. Includes the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator


Education and Prevention

American Council for Drug Education
"A substance abuse prevention and education agency that develops programs and materials based on the most current scientific research on drug use and its impact on society."

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention
Info provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.

D.A.R.E.
This police officer-led clasroom-based K-12 anti-drug program was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, and has spread throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Join Together
Supports "community-based efforts to advance effective alcohol and drug policy, prevention, and treatment".

Phoenix House
Prevention education and programs aimed at high school and college students, their families and the professionals who work with them.


International

Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse
Information (bi-lingual) on Canada's efforts to reduce alcohol and other drug-related harms.

European Association for the Treatment of Addiction (UK)
This umbrella group consists of members representing over 500 services in the continuum of independent drug and alcohol treatment and aftercare.

World Health Organization (WHO) Program on Substance Abuse
Information pertaining to psychoactive substance use and abuse, as well as about the WHO's projects and activities in the areas of substance use and dependence.


Policy Perspectives

Alcohol & Epidemiology Program
This program conducts advanced research to discover effective community and policy interventions to reduce alcohol-related social and health problems.

Center for Science in the Public Interest
CSPI helps focus public and decision-maker attention on high-leverage policy reforms.

Drug Policy Alliance
DPA is a leading organization working to change U.S. policy related to illegal substances.

Drug Policy Research Center (RAND). Good empirical reports, publications, and newsletter, which help inform "community leaders and public officials" on drug problems, including alcohol.

Faces and Voices of Recovery
Faces & Voices of Recovery is a grass roots organization of Americans in long term recovery from alcohol and other drug additions dedicated to changing public perceptions of recovery and promoting effective public policy in the U.S.

Legal Action Center
The LAC conducts programs and advocates for fair and equitable treatment of all people in recovery or suffering from alcohol and drug problems, people at risk for or living with HIV/AIDS, and individuals with criminal justice histories.

Office of National Drug Control Policy
Along with policy information, this White House site includes helpful information about numerous types of drugs.


Research

Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University
Promotes the "identification, prevention and effective treatment of alcohol and other drug use problems though research, education, training and policy advocacy.

Center for Substance Abuse Research at the University of Maryland
This center conducts and dissemminates research, evaluation and statistics; provides training in research methods and policy analysis; and technical assistance to agencies and organizations in the field.

National Institute on Drug Abuse
NIDA's mission is to conduct and support research related to substance abuse across a broad range of disciplines and to foster the dissemination and use of research results to improve prevention, treatment and policy.

Prevention Research Center
One of sixteen centers sponsored by the NIAAA (see above), the PRC's focus is on the social and physical environments that influence individual behavior that leads to alcohol and drug misuse -- and is the only center that specializes in prevention.

Research Institute on Addictions at SUNY Buffalo
A research center national leader in the study of alcohol and substance abuse issues.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
A major funder of research and programs on health issues in the U.S., this page provides access to research supported articles, reports, and other relevant documents.

Treatment Research Institute
A non-profit research and development organization dedicated to"reducing the devastating effects of alcohol and other drug abuse on individuals, families and communities by employing scientific methods and disseminating evidence-based information."


Self Help Groups

Al-Anon/AlaTeen
Provides resources for professionals about the organization and information for family members of those with alcohol problems.

Alcoholics Anonymous
Info about AA, facts about alcoholism and contact information for U.S. and Canadian offices.

Cocaine Anonymous
A "fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from their addiction."

Faces and Voices of Recovery
An advocacy, research, training and support group for both individuals and the nonprofits who serve them.

Narcotics Anonymous World Services
This self-help group site is also rich with information for professionals.


Specific Populations

Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention
Includes a publications catalog on alcohol prevention on campus and news stories about campus alcohol issues.

Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically Dependent Persons and Significant Others
This group's mission is to assist individuals, "promote knowledge and understanding of the disease of alcoholism and chemical dependency as it involves the Jewish Community; and act as a resource center and information clearinghouse on the effects of alcoholism and drug dependency on Jewish family life."

National Association for Children of Alcoholics
This site provides information and resources targeted toward professionals, children (including adult) of alcoholics, families, clergy, and educators.

National Association on Alcohol, Drugs and Disability
Promotes awareness and education about substance abuse among people with co-existing disabilities.

National Association of Lesbian/Gay Addiction Profesionals
Dedicated to the prevention and treatment of substance abuse and other addictions in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender communities.

National Black Alcoholism and Addictions Council
An organization committed to education, strengthening services and treatment, and developing research models specifically designed for the black population.

National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (LCAT)
Strives to prevent or eliminate tobacco use and reduce alcohol abuse in the Latino community through research, programs, and policy analysis.


Statistics

Lexis Nexis Statistical U-M Restricted Database
Indexes and provides tables of statistics gathered by the U.S. and state governments, international governmental sources, including the U.N., nonprofit and commercial organizations. 

National Center for Health Statistics
From their A-Z index, choose either Alcohol or Substance Abuse to gain more information including statistics.

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
Among other federal enforcement information related to drugs, this site provides general and state by state statistics on seizures, arrests, and links to other relevant government sites.

Treatment

American Society of Addiction Medicine
Contains information on treatment and information for service providers, such as practice guidelines, publications, public policy statements, etc.

Ensuring Solutions
Created by the George Washington University Medical Center to "increase treatment for individuals with alcohol problems by providing research based information and tools," this web site contains research reports, fact sheets, issue briefs and an Alcohol Cost Calculator.

Hazelden
A nonprofit organization aimed at helping recovering alcoholics and other addicts. Site contains links to additional web sites, training resources, FAQs, quizzes, publications, etc.

National Association for Addiction Professionals
Includes job ads, certification information, catalog of publications, and links to various treatment resources.

National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices
A searchable database of interventions compiled by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Therapeutic Communities of America
An association representing over 650 substance abuse and mental health non-profit treatment programs, this group aims to increase treatment programs' efficacy and efficiency, educate the public, policymakers and organizations on the importance of research, education, prevention and treatment, and advocate for the populations served by its members.
