U-M Resources in Sociology

SOCIOLOGY COLLECTIONS

The University of Michigan's Department of Sociology ranks among the finest in the country, and the University Library has historically sought to develop collections responsive to the needs of world class researchers in Sociology. The interdisciplinary nature of the field, however, results in local resources being dispersed across a number of campus libraries. While the core collections in sociology are likely to be found in the Shapiro Undergraduate or Hatcher Graduate Libraries, useful paper or electronic resources may also be found in the Social Work Library, Public Health Library & Informatics , Population Studies Center, Kresge Business Administration Library, or other specialized campus collections [see map]. The strengths of the sociology collections are the breadth and depth, providing items of research interest in various languages, but focusing on English language materials.

The sociology collections at the Hatcher Graduate Library are developed by various professionals who can be contacted for class instructional sessions, in-depth reference assistance, or with purchase suggestions for books, journals, or electronic resources. (See the list of Subject Specialists for contact information.)

Mirlyn

Mirlyn is the University of Michigan University Library catalog. The catalog represents those items owned by the campus libraries. (The Kresge Business Administration Library and the Law Library are administratively separate from the University Library system, and therefore have distinct and separate catalogs.)

Searching for locally held resources in sociology generally begins in the catalog. Mirlyn includes the catalog of University Library holdings in all formats, and links to catalogs from other local and regional libraries from which holdings can be obtained either through U-M borrowing privileges or interlibrary loan (ILL). For brief information on searching Mirlyn, please see Mirlyn Tips.

Some subject headings you might use in Mirlyn as "Subject begins with . . . " searches are:
