4. Finding Social Science Research for Policy Background

To find social science research articles on a policy issue, you can use our web page, Alphabetical List of Social Work
Databases
, which lists indexing and abstracting services relevant to social work. Some of the most helpful newspaper,
journal, and book databases for general policy background are listed below with screen shots and tips for navigating to
RefWorks, a bibliographic management tool. Please link to and explore two databases on this page. Also, at some point
this semester, look up your chosen issue in Social Work Speaks in the Reference Collection.

 

ProQuest  U-M Restricted Database 
Quick Tips

Option 1: “Print/Export/Mail” this record; Change “Record Format” to RefWorks; “Go”; Save as
text file to Desktop; In RefWorks, go to "References" then "Import": Import file should be University
of Michigan University Library; Database should be Mirlyn Library Catalog; "Browse" for saved text
file on Desktop. Click on "Import".

Option 2: Search directly from within RefWorks, go to"Search" then "Online Catalog or Database";

Family and Society Studies Worldwide U-M Restricted Database
Access via web:  EBSCO
1970-   (Updated monthly)
A "comprehensive, systematic, and non-evaluative resource of research, policy, and practice literature
in the fields of Family Science, Human Ecology, Human Development and Social Welfare. FSSW provides
over 719,600 abstracts and bibliographic records drawn from over two thousand professional journals,
books, popular literature, conference papers, government reports, and other sources."

Predictably, there are fewer results for current events in journal databases than there are in newspaper databases

Contains references to over 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories,
research and conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, internet material, etc.
concerning public affairs worldwide. The database can be searched by broad subject headings, such as culture
and religion, human rights and social conditions and policy or more specifc subtopics, like social policy, poverty

Weekly periodical on government agencies; includes major legislative issues


Social Work Speaks [Reference HV 95 .N26 2003] for the "profession's most systematic approach to policy development"
