20. Finding Documents in the Library

If I find reference to a government document that is not on the web, how do I find a hard copy?

There are nearly 1,250 depository libraries that serve as one of the vital links between the people and the government. Anyone can visit Federal depository libraries and use the Federal depository collection. At the University of Michigan, the library catalog Mirlyn provides access to government documents.

"SuDoc" stands for Superintendent of Documents and is a library classification system that arranges documents by agency, rather than by subject in many libraries. Most documents at the University of Michigan are reclassed in LC call numbers. A search in Mirlyn will provide the appropriate call number, but a "SuDoc" number in a LexisNexis Congressional Index record (or in a LexisNexis Statistical record) is a good indicator that we have received the document through the Federal Depository Library Program.
