Social Work Library: Mirlyn Tips

Mirlyn Tips

Scope note:  This web page supplements the information needs of School of Social Work students. The primary purpose of this page is to highlight key features of Mirlyn as well as to provide search examples and tips on how to maximize results when searching the library catalog. For more comprehensive assistance using Mirlyn, please contact Library Staff at social.work.library@umich.edu.

Mirlyn is the University of Michigan's library catalog.  Mirlyn includes:

  • the listing of library materials owned by most of the University's libraries, including U-M Flint
  • a catalog of course reserve materials located in various library's Course Reserve collections
  • links to other Big Ten and regional university library catalogs

Additional helpful information about using Mirlyn is available at: http://www.lib.umich.edu/help/mirlyn/help.html

Mirlyn Tips:

After several minutes of inactivity, your session will "time out." If this happens, you must click on the Login link again to connect to Mirlyn.

If you retrieve too many results, narrow your search by limiting to specific dates of publication, type of format, library location, or language. Think about searching for variations of spellings, e.g. American English spelling of "center" and British English spelling of "centre," and try the truncation feature (?). When conducting a "Title begins with . . ." search, leave off the initial articles (a, an, the). Do not search for journal titles by the journal abbreviations -- spell out the journal title in the "Journal/Serial Name begins With . . ." search input box.

Mirlyn is not case-sensitive.

Use quotation marks to search for an exact phrase, such as: "interpersonal practice"

Both the Basket feature and the My Shelf feature let you mark and store records for later use. However, the Basket is only a temporary storage space; records saved to the Basket will be lost after the current Mirlyn session is ended. Records saved in My Shelf, on the other hand, are permanently saved and may be recalled in any subsequent Mirlyn session once you log in.

You can use the Get This feature in Mirlyn to request a Library-to-Library delivery for currently available items (and the same function to request a recall if the item you want is checked out). You must be logged into Mirlyn to use the Get This feature. To make a Get This request, you need to display the "What libraries have" screen of the item which you wish to request (go to this screen from a results list by clicking on the specific library link in the Location column). Once you are at the "What libraries have" screen, you will see a Get This link next to items for which this delivery service is available. Click on that link, and you will be taken to a Get This form on which you can indicate what library you would like the item delivered to.
