Items owned by the Social Work Library which deal with queer, transgendered, bisexual, lesbian, and gay issues in the social work field can be difficult to find because many subject headings must be used in varied sources. QTBLG issues typically involve social, historical, psychological, medical, legal, and cultural concerns. However, due to the social stigmata of earlier decades, unearthing research related content can be difficult. Any interdisciplinary research strategy requires the use of discipline-specific vocabularies, which have evolved over time. For example, the term "homosexuality" did not appear as a scholarly research term in libraries until 1946. Typically in the field of social work, items can be found by searching the Mirlyn catalog for "Subject begins with . . " searches with the phrases social work with gays or social work with lesbians. Because resources on QTBLG issues may be found under a variety of related subject headings, we provide some suggested headings below, which can be used for searching the catalog.
Some suggested and related subject headings to browse in the catalog include:
| Social work with gays--United States | Gay couples | Lesbians | Gay marriage |
| Social work with lesbians--United States | Gays | Lesbian couples | Bisexuals |
| Gay youth | Older gays | Lesbian mothers | Bisexuality |
| Lesbian youth | Middle aged gays | Lesbianism | Bisexuality in marriage |
| Bisexual youth | Older gay men | Older lesbians | Same sex marriage |
| Gender identity | Homosexuality | Transsexuals | Coming out (sexual orientation) |
| Gender identity disorders | Gay men | Transsexualism | Sexual orientation |
| Gay rights | Gay parents | Transvestites | Sex role |
| Gay liberation movement | Gay and Lesbian studies | Outing (sexual orientation) |
