What I do
As a Public Services Librarian, I work 20 hours per week helping to support research needs of the social work community. I provide reference service to and one-on-one consultations with social work students and faculty. I also deliver a structured approach to information literacy competencies in foundation and research-based courses, especially in the areas of public policy, community needs assessment, evidence-based practice, and topical areas such as international social work, aging, and professional development. I'm interested in accessibility of primary sources for the history of social welfare and in measuring information literacy competencies in our students. These goals are supported by my web page tutorials, classroom instruction, and assessment tools.
Background
I received my B. A. degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Washington and a B. S. in History from Utah State University where I had my first library job in 1968. After a brief career as a counselor with the Assault Crisis Center in Ann Arbor during the 1970s, I completed my Master's degree in Library and Information Studies at the University of Michigan. I recently completed a Specialization in Aging Certificate to enhance my interest in public library outreach programs for seniors, especially life review, reminiscence, guided autobiographical writing groups, and memory aids for memory-impaired patients and their caregivers. I previously worked for Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University as a reference librarian.
