Scope note: This research guide highlights some of the resources available in the Social Work Library, on campus, and on the web which deal with juvenile delinquency and juvenile justice. Child Abuse, Welfare and Adoption U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
References books, journal articles, papers, federal grant reports and descriptions of programs and treatment related to the maltreatment, safety and well-being of children from 1965 to the present. A publicly available version of this database can be found at the National Child Welfare Information Gateway at http://www.childwelfare.gov/.

CQ (Congressional Quarterly) Researcher U-M Restricted Database
Each weekly issue covers a single theme, written by a seasoned journalist -- CQ Researcher is noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage topics of particular interest to Congress.   A great place to get going on any topic they’ve covered. 

Criminal Justice Abstracts (Guide Available) U-M Restricted Database
Indexes major journals, book chapters, and selected government reports in criminology and related disciplines.  Search delinquen* or juvenile justice to get started.

ERIC
Provides access to journal articles and many other types of publications in the field.   Each reference will have either an EJ number, indicating it is a journal article, or an ED number, indicating it is an ERIC "document". Many are available full-text; virtually all are available on microfiche in the Grad Library.
LegalTracrestricted journal symbol
A good source for articles on juvenile justice and delinquency published in legal and criminology journals; many of the journals are available electronically via the Law Library.

NCJRS (National Criminal Justice Reference Service Abstracts Database)
A database produced by the U.S. Department of Justice agencies, with summaries of nearly 200,000 publications, reports, articles, and AV products from the U.S. and around the world, including statistics, research findings, program descriptions, congressional hearing transcripts, and training materials.  A good source for crime statistics and information on juvenile justice.  

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service Bulletin) U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
Contains references to journal articles, books, government and international agency documents, statistical, research and conference reports, concerning public affairs, public and social policy worldwide. 

PsycInfo U-M Restricted Database
Extensive coverage of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations in psychology and related disciplines, produced by the American Psychological Association (APA).   

Social Services Abstracts U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
An index of social services literature, including social welfare, policy and community development.  Abstracts cover journal articles, dissertations and book reviews.

Social Work Abstracts U-M Restricted Database
Produced by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), this database covers journal articles on a wide range of social issues, including juvenile justice.

Sociological Abstracts U-M Restricted Database (Guide available)
Covers scholarly sociological literature; of potential use to researchers looking for current and historical trends related to juvenile justice.

Bureau of Justice Statistics
Created by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, this site contains information on juvenile arrests and arrests organized by age group. Various types of data related to juveniles can be found via any link in the “Statistics about” category on the main page.

Crime in the United States
Formerly titled Uniform Crime Reports, these statistics are compiled and distributed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Lexis Nexis Statistical U-M Restricted Database
Indexes and provides tables of statistics gathered by the U.S. and state governments, international governmental sources, including the U.N., nonprofit and commercial organizations. 

National Youth Gang Center
Formed as a part of Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Deliquency Prevention's response to increasing gang violence, this center publishes informative literature and works with state and local organizations in prevention of gang violence.  Lots of statistical info included.

Statistical Briefing Book  
The Statistical Briefing Book (SBB) provides online information from the Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention about juvenile crime, victimization and involvement in the juvenile justice system.

Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics
Online version of the sourcebook created by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The current site presents information that will be included in the newest print edition. The site is organized by topic but allows keyword searching. There is also a specific section on juvenile delinquency.

Selected Free Web Resources

American Bar Association Juvenile Justice Committee
Provides resources related to juvenile justice including fact sheets, full text of articles related to juvenile justice from the association’s Criminal Justice Magazine, and other useful web resources. 

Building Blocks for Youth  
An alliance of advocates, professionals and community organizers working toward promoting fair and effective juvenile justice policies and eliminating disparate treatment and overrepresentaiton of youth of color in the justice system.  Numerous key issue and fact sheets, state by state information, research initiatives and more.   

Child Welfare League of America – Juvenile Justice Division
The Juvenile Justice Division serves the overall mission of the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) on behalf of children and families involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.  Information on critical issues, statistics and their newsletter are among the resources included.

Children's Defense Fund
Children's Defense Fund is a youth advocacy organization with connections to the religious community. Resources including information on gun violence and school violence, as well as state violence prevention statistics, are available on their site.

Coalition for Juvenile Justice
A national nonprofit made up of citizen volunteers serving on gubernatorial committee concerned with juvenile justice issues.  Fact sheets and position papers are among the document accessible from this site.

Juvenile Info Network
This alliance of various organizations was created to encourage communications among juvenile justice professionals and to foster the development of new reform programs in systems at the state and local levels.

Juvenile Justice
This “virtual library” contains links to a multitude of resources from the Justice Information Center, a service of the National Criminal Justice Reference Service.

National Center for Juvenile Justice
A nonprofit research arm of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the center supports research on topics related to juvenile justice. State profiles and statistics are included.

National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges
An organization designed to provide training, technical assistance and research in support of the nation's courts, judges and staff in their work to improve the juvenile justice system. 

National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center
Designed for youth, professionals, peers and family members, this organization makes available tools for working with youth affected by or involved in violence. Also includes fact sheets, best practices statements, statistics, research bulletins and descriptions of promising programs.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (U.S Department of Justice)
This office provides leadership, coordination, and resources to improve the juvenile justice system; to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization; and support to states and communities to develop intervention and prevention programs.
