Social Work Library: Procedure for Placing Materials on Reserve

Procedure for Placing Materials on Reserve

The Social Work Library operates a course reserve system in support of the School of Social Work curriculum. (Instructors teaching courses in other departments should consult other University Library reserve services to determine which is appropriate to handle their materials.) Instructors are asked to consider the following points when making course reserve requests:
  • Please submit all requests as soon as possible so that materials can be processed for your students' use during the upcoming semester. Requests will be processed in the order in which they are received.
  • Faculty are requested to observe a 35-item limit (negotiable), due to limitations of space and processing capabilities; any combination of books and articles is acceptable. Coursepacks, either commercially produced or items compiled in a folder, count as one item.
  • To place materials on reserve, use any of the following methods.
    • Use the Course Reserves Request Form
    • E-mail your syllabus or text list to social.work.library@umich.edu (please include your name, course number, and uniquename or telephone number)
    • Send paper copy of a list to the Social Work Library, attn: Reserves
      • This may be a printed document, a copy of your syllabus with items clearly marked, or a legible handwritten list.

Provide the imprint (place, publisher, date) for all new titles. New titles will be purchased locally if possible. If new titles are not available in local bookstores, it may take a minimum of 2 months to acquire through normal ordering channels. Only one copy of a title will be purchased.

Provide a full citation (journal title, volume, number, year and pages) for articles. All photocopy requests must comply with copyright regulations.

The library does not purchase coursepacks, but we will place your personal copy on reserve for one semester.

Personal copies of books and photocopies not owned or unavailable in the University Library System can be placed on reserve. Photocopies must comply with copyright regulations. All personal copies will be returned after the end of the semester to your Social Work mailbox (room permitting), or we will notify you that items must be picked up from the library. Items not picked up by the designated date will be disposed of in a suitable manner.

If you have identified websites that you would like to include as part of your course-assigned readings, please send URLs by e-mail or web form. (Included in 35-item limit.)

Using CTools? CTools can show your Mirlyn course reserves if you activate the Library Reserves Tool

All reserve items can be checked out for four hours during the day, or overnight if it is within four hours of library's posted closing time.

If additions are necessary as the semester progresses, please notify the Social Work Library at least two weeks prior to the assignment so that the item is ready for students when they need it.

Questions should be addressed to social.work.library@umich.edu.
