Social Work Library: Frequently Asked Questions about Course Reserves

Frequently Asked Questions about Course Reserves

WHAT ARE COURSE RESERVES?

The Social Work Library maintains a fluid reserve collection of books and articles supporting the School of Social Work curriculum. Items designated by teaching faculty are drawn both from the Social Work Library as well as from other campus libraries for the reserve collection. Items not owned by the U-M Library System are typically ordered from publishers or local bookstores.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT'S ON RESERVE?

View the Course Reserve catalog in Mirlyn. To do this, point your web browser to: http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/. Login to Mirlyn. Click on the Course Reserves link on the right side of the Mirlyn banner. Search for course name, course number, instructor, or book title/author.

ARE RESERVES AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY?

Reserve items that are available electronically are listed in the Course Reserve catalog. You may be asked to authenticate to view these items. You must have Adobe Reader to view items in .pdf format.

WHERE IS THE RESERVE COLLECTION LOCATED?

The Social Work Library Reserve collection is shelved at the Service Desk.

HOW DO I ASK FOR A RESERVE ITEM?

First determine if the item you need to read is on reserve by checking the Mirlyn Course Reserves catalog. Ask library staff for the item. We will need the author and title information.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP RESERVE ITEMS?

You can check out reserve items for 4 hours. If the library is within 4 hours of the posted closing time, items are due 1 hour after library opening the next day. Reserve items cannot be renewed.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF RESERVE ITEMS I CAN BORROW?

There is no limit, but please remember that reserve items cannot be renewed--please be considerate of your fellow students' needs.

CAN I TAKE RESERVE ITEMS OUT OF THE LIBRARY?

Most reserve items can be taken out of the library, as long as they are returned at the due time.

ARE THERE FINES ON OVERDUE RESERVE ITEMS?

All students, staff and faculty are assessed a $1.00/hour/item reserve overdue fine, which accumulates 24 hours/day, whether the library is open or closed. The maximum accumulation is $100/item.

DO YOU HAVE COURSEPACKS FOR ALL MY CLASSES?

The library keeps professors' personal copies, including coursepacks if they wish, on reserve for the current term. Coursepacks are not purchased by the library.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE LIBRARY TO PUT SOMETHING ON RESERVE?

Reserve processing is a high priority at the Social Work Library. We put items on reserve as soon as we can after we receive requests from faculty, because we know students must complete class assignments. We normally process reserve requests from faculty in the order received. SSW faculty can place reserves requests online at http://www.lib.umich.edu/socwork/courseresreq.html.
