Application Process

Students will fill out an application form and submit a 750-1,000  word personal essay describing the library or archival research, literature review and resources used in preparing for or completing their research project. They will describe successes and failures, good resources, and what they learned from the library research process. Students must submit the name of a project mentor/faculty sponsor, a bibliography citing all sources that supported their research, and a copy of their final project.

Tips for the Personal Essay

Faculty Support

Faculty support is required for the award.  If the applicant work is for a course-related project, the course professor should be the faculty sponsor.  If the work is for a job, volunteer project or some other non-course related project then a faculty advisor (professor, lecturer, GSI), work supervisor or some other appropriate mentor can supply the support documentation.

Review Committee

A committee composed of six librarians (both from the Undergraduate Library and a variety of subject librarians from across campus) will review the applications and select the winners and honorable mention awardees.

Evaluation Criteria

The personal essay, end product/project, and bibliography will be evaluated. The personal essay describing the research process will be awarded points based on the sophistication of the search strategies used, comprehension of the material, and use of appropriate resources. The final product will be evaluated and assigned points based on the quality of the work in terms of how well written/produced it is, how well the product addresses the original research question/problem, the depth of understanding of the topic, and appropriate resource citation/documentation. The bibliography will be assigned points based on the depth and breadth of sources listed, and the consistent and correct use of citations. A scoring/weighting rubric will be provided to the review committee.
