Borrowing Privileges

In order to check books or journals out, you must have UM Library borrowing privileges.  Your Mcard is your library card.

Loan Periods

Undergraduate Library circulating books and bound journals can be checked out for 3 weeks to undergraduate students and guests and 8 weeks for faculty, staff, and graduate students.  Current journals and magazines circulate for 3 days to all U-M borrowers.

Returns

Outside book returns are located at the southwest side of the Shapiro Library. There is also a book return at the circulation desk in the lobby.

Renewals

Books may be renewed up to six times unless requested by another patron.

Learn how to renew a book from the Borrowing and Circulation page on renewals.

Holds/Recalls

A user may request that library staff place a recall or hold on a book that is currently checked out. Borrowers are guaranteed the use of a library book for a minimum of three weeks, unless a rush recall is placed on an item needed for course reserve. Borrowing privileges can be suspended if a recalled item is not returned by the new recall due date. In addition, a $2.00 per day per item fine is assessed to all categories or borrowers.
