Scientific research is plentiful, but a few of the best are highlighted on the front covers of books and journals.

The Shapiro Science Library at the University of Michigan is hosting an event to celebrate a display of journal and book covers featuring the work of faculty, research staff, and students in the Natural Sciences departments and the School of Natural Resources and Environment.

The covers, captioned to highlight the UM author/scientist, have been framed and mounted throughout the Shapiro Science Library, beginning with a wall in the Shien-Ming Wu Current Periodicals Reading Room. This third annual installation of science covers will highlight articles and books published between 2002 and 2009.

With this exhibit, the Shapiro Science Library pays tribute to the University of Michigan’s outstanding record of scientific achievement and will inspire current and future students to carry on the Michigan tradition of excellence.

For Catherine Soehner, Director of Science and Engineering Libraries, the relationship between scholarship and libraries makes this exhibit a natural one for the Science Library:  “The science covers display provides a visual connection between the work of the University and the work of the library. One of the goals of this project is to identify U-M research that has been highlighted as exemplary and to provide a place where the exhibit will encourage consultation, discovery, and collaboration.”

A reception honoring faculty whose works are displayed will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Shien-Ming Wu Current Periodicals Room on the third floor of the Shapiro Science Library with remarks from Stephen Forrest, Vice President of Research and William Gould Dow Collegiate Professor of Electrical Engineering, at 4:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. We encourage you to RSVP to Alissa Talley (734-764-3577 or alissat@umich.edu) by February 15, 2010.

This permanent display is available for viewing in the Shien-Ming Wu Current Periodicals Room on the third floor of the Shapiro Science Library, which is open 8:00a.m. - 5:00a.m. Monday-Friday, and 10:00a.m.-5:00a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Funding for this project was made possible through the Shien-Ming Wu endowment fund, a generous donation from Daisy Wu in honor of her late husband, a U-M faculty member in Engineering.
