Information about editions of Microfilmed Newspapers

Most microfilm editions of newspapers are the same as the print copies shelved in the newspaper reading room.

Some exceptions include:

Title   Print Edition   Microfilm Edition
Chicago Tribune Final North Sports Final
Detroit Free Press Metro Final Metro Final
Detroit News Metro Metro
New York Times National Late
Washington Post National Weekly Final

In some cases, such as the New York Times, multiple editions of the same newspaper are published at different times of the day and tailored to different regions. In these cases, the latest regional edition where the newspaper is published is the edition selected for microfilm.

Some differences between editions can include:

  • Additional coverage on any major news story that occurred on a given day
  • Elimination of "minor" news stories that may have been published in an earlier edition
  • Updated reporting of sports news, final scores, etc. - information that may not have been available when an earlier edition went to print
  • Different headlines for stories that are the same or nearly identical to those printed in an earlier edition

When searching for a specific article on microfilm, it may be necessary to view a few pages before or after the cited page and/or look for differently worded headlines when using an edition that differs from the edition noted in the citation.

Library staff can assist you in determining which edition(s) of a particular newspaper is held by the library.
