All of our subject databases may be searched by keyword and author. Some also support other types of searching. There are no standard search terms to use, so follow the instructions or examples provided in each database.
Search help is available either through the database, or through the Science Library Guides section of our website.
Tip: many databases will let you search by title. This refers to the title of the article, not of the journal.
After you submit your search, you should see a list of results. You can then select individual items to view more information. Typically, that information includes the citation: all the authors, full title of the article, abbreviated or full title of the journal, the volume, issue number if applicable, and date of publication. In many instances, an abstract is included.
You can also mark records to save, print, email to yourself or download to a file or bibliographic manager (eg. EndNote). The individual databases should tell you how to do this, or see our Science Library Guides. For detailed information on how to download these records for use with bibliographic management software like EndNote or ProCite, see the KNC's Citation Management pages.
Databases list articles from many different journals, not all of them owned by UM. If UM does not own the journal, you can request a copy of the article you need from Interlibrary Loan.
Some databases will link directly to the individual articles if they are available online in full text. Some do not have a direct link and you'll need to go through Mirlyn to access the online article.
If you are unable to find the electronic version of the article, be sure to verify the following:
