Cited reference searching allows you to find articles that cite a previously published article. It is a means of tracing a particular research forward in time. One can also think of this as “following a citation trail” through time to see how works grow and develop in a focused area of research.
If you have located an article that is related to your research, you can search for articles written after the publication date that cites that particular article.
Another useful technique is to search just the author's name to see who is citing that author's research. In this particular case, the focus is on the author rather than a specific research.
While Web of Science remains the premier source for cited references, other databases have started offering cited reference searching capabilities as well. The years covered are not as comprehensive as Web of Science, but these other tools can be very useful for cited reference searching of recent articles.
