The Shapiro Science Library collections support research and teaching in the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE). Research and teaching in the SNRE spans the biological and social sciences as they relate to natural resources. Their diverse, interdisciplinary programs study the natural sciences and natural resources as applied to management, policy and education.

The Science Library collects materials in the following related subject areas: Conservation biology, aquaculture, forestry, fisheries, the botanical aspects of landscape architecture, ecosystem management, restoration ecology, wildlife management, environmental education and natural resource management, remote sensing, endangered species, waste-recycling, and acid rain.

Related materials are located in the Museums Library.

  • International Plant Names Index - IPNI More information about International Plant Names Index - IPNI (formerly Index Kiwensis). An international, comprehensive register of plant names, mainly at the species level. Incorporates much of the Gray Card Index of New World vascular plant citations, formerly a separate database.
  • Grzmek's Animal Life Encyclopedia. Comprehensive coverage of animals down to the species level including description, life history, fossil record, relationships with man, and illustrations. Location: Science Library Reference, QL 45.2 .G923 2003
  • Species Information Library More information about Species Information Library Full-text records describing taxonomy, habitat, life history, literature references, etc. for more than 7200 North American fish and wildlife species.
  • Synopsis and Classification of Living Organisms. Short articles on all taxa down to the family level. Illustrated. Location: Science Library Reference, QH 83 .S891
  • USDA Plants Database A database of vascular and non-vascular plants that are found in the United States.

  • BioDiversity Web Encyclopedia Covers ecosystems studies and biogeography of threatened species and other aspects of biodiversity studies.
  • Encyclopedia of Biodiversity. Comprehensive 3 volume encyclopedia, with scholarly articles on species biodiversity.

  • Ecolex: a gateway to environmental law From the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), can search IUCN's ELIS database and UNEP's Celib database. Coverage: 1997 - present.
  • Environmental Encyclopedia Short but detailed articles with references. Comprehensive coverage of all sides of environmental issues. Well illustrated.

  • Encyclopedia of Environmental Information Sources. A subject based guide to sources of information on all aspects of the environment. Useful for locating other references.

  • Statistical Record of the Environment. Statistical information drawn from governmental and private sources. Covers environmental indicators, air, water, land, wildlife, energy, toxic substances, solid waste, resource recovery, noise, economics, laws, markets, and technology.

  • Statistical Web Resources for Environmental Sciences List of key environmental government agencies that provide statistical data, compiled by UM Library's Government Documents Center.
