Why Use Indexes?

What are indexes? What makes them so useful?

  • They filter the literature to collect articles only from authoritative sources, or subject relevant sources
  • They "browse" thousands of journals efficiently
  • They glimpse the articles inside the journals
  • They give results per the parameters you specify

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts

To access this database, go to Search Tools

  1. Select Find Databases
  2. Select By Name
  3. Type Cambridge or Cambridge Scientific. Press Go
  4. Scroll down to find this title
  • Access to about 100 databases in the areas of aquatic, environmental, biological and medical sciences; toxicology; mechanical engineering; materials science and engineering; aerospace; linguistics; and art history
  • Databases include Animal Behavior Abstracts, and Zoological Records Plus See below for more information on these two databases
  • Can multi-search several databases at once

ISI Web of Knowledge
- Science Citation Index (SCI)
- Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)

To access this database, go to Search Tools

  1. Select Find Databases
  2. Select By Name
  3. Type ISI, press Go
  4. Select ISI Web of Knowledge to search SCI and SSCI together
  • A collection of databases, including SCI and SSCI
  • Multi-disciplinary: covers biology, zoology, psychology and other disciplines
  • Dates of coverage varies with each database
  • Provides features such as Cited Reference searching and Related Records

Biosis Previews

To access this database, go to Search Tools

  1. Select Find Databases
  2. Select By Name
  3. Type Biosis, press Go
  • The leading index to scholarly journal literature in biology and related fields in the life sciences
  • Also indexes books, book chapters, conferences and technical reports
  • Covers over 5,000 journals in the life sciences
  • Contains over 13 million records from 1969 to present

PsycInfo & PsycArticles (American Psychological Association)

To access this database, go to Search Tools

  1. Select Find Databases
  2. Select By Name
  3. Type PsycInfo (or PsycArticles) , press Go
  • PsycInfo is the leading index to scholarly journal literature in psychology and related fields. PsycArticles is a subset of PsychInfo
  • PsycInfo contains nearly 2 million records from 1887 to the present. No online full text. Indexes articles, books, book chapters, dissertations, and conferences in psychology
  • PsycArticles contains over 20,000 searchable full-text articles from over 30 journals

Zoological Record Plus (CSA)

To access this database, go to Search Tools

  1. Select Find Databases
  2. Select By Name
  3. Type Zoological, press Go
  • Provides a comprehensive collection of references to zoological research articles
  • Covers the major areas of zoology, including behavior, evolution, habitat, nutrition, with particular emphasis on taxonomy and nomenclature
  • Covers over 4,000 journals
  • Contains nearly 2 million records from 1978 to the present

Animal Behavior Abstracts (CSA)

To access this database, go to Search Tools

  1. Select Find Databases
  2. Select By Name
  3. Type Animal Behavior , press Go
  • Specialized index of journal articles relating to animal behavior, including topics such as behavioral ecology, genetics, applied ethology, neurophysiology
  • Covers 200 journals
  • Contains over 94,000 records from 1982 to present

Other Electronic Resources

  • Finding Species Information - information on many plant and animal species in print and electronic formats. Updated 3 times a year.
  • Ulrich's International Periodical Directory - a global source for periodicals information, and a searchable database. Includes magazines, journals, newspapers, newsletters, 'ezines from over 200 countries.
  • RefWorks - a web-based bibliographic management service. Allows you to create a list of references for your research paper, and arranges the entries in one of many style formats. Since it is web-based, you can access it anywhere with online access. Go here for a RefWorks FAQ.
