Chemistry 215 Honors. Library & Research Guide

Tips

  • Remote (off-campus) access: use the Electronic Journals page or Search Tools page (major databases, encyclopedias, etc.) or Mirlyn to link to databases or ejournals.
  • Use the UM Library Terminal Services versions of Beilstein and SciFinder for in-library computers or off-campus/remote use. Use the full software versions to obtain additional features when on-campus.
  • For Science Learning Center use, please use the full software versions on SLC Windows computers.

Chemical Reaction & Preparation Searching:

For more complete results, search multiple databases. The two main resources are Beilstein and SciFinder Scholar (from Chemical Abstracts).

Scifinder Scholar:

Reaction searching in Scholar retrieves mainly novel reactions, rather than every occurrence. For exhaustive retrieval of preparations of specific substances, use a structure preparation search strategy instead. Covers the chemical literature thoroughly, including patent literature. Please remember to logoff when finished. There are a very limited number of simultaneous users allowed at one time for the University of Michigan subscription.

Beilstein:

Covers the largest number of structure/reaction searchable chemical reactions, but a smaller number of journal sources (almost no patent coverage). Good first choice when you are looking for very specific reaction examples. Also, there are no limits on simultaneous usage for the University of Michiga campus. Please remember to logoff when finished.

Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (e-EROS)

  • Covers reagents used for organic synthesis. Includes typical examples of transformations, rather than comprehensive coverage of every occurrence.
