A star catalog is "a list of spherical coordinates of stars or their equivalent, such as standard coordinates, that were obtained by the evaluation and reduction of observations made expressly for the accurate determination of stellar positions." (Eichhorn in Astronomy of Star Positions, 1974, p. 1)
The University Library has hundreds of star catalogs shelved in the Science library on the 4th floor. Catalogs are entered into Mirlyn under their titles. For instance, the Michigan catalogue of two-dimensional spectral types for the HD stars can be found by either entering this title, or by entering the Michigan Spectral Catalog as a title search. The call number, QB881 .H84 , tells where this multi-volume work may be retrieved.
Star catalogs are classed under different call numbers to reflect their subject differences. The following list of call numbers under which most of the catalogs are classed may help you in your search.
The major Library of Congress call numbers for Star catalogs are:
Over 3000 catalogs are available in electronic form (ASCII or FITS) via the Astronomer's Bazaar. Over 2000 catalogs are available via the VizieR browser, also hosted by the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center (CDS) at Vizier Catalog Service .
Five volumes of the Michigan Catalogue of HD Stars (1975-1999) are available in ASCII files and through the VizierR browser.
By entering Michigan as a keyword in the query box at http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Cats.html, the catalogs are retrieved and through the VizierR browser, specific data can be located.
