University Reserves: Problems with Course Reserves

Having Problems with Course Reserves?

Problems with passwords and signing on

Your web browser must be configured to accept cookies to use Library Authentication and hence Electronic Reserves. This is usually set in the "Preferences" or "Options" settings for your web browser. If you know your password is correct but every time you enter it and click "Continue" nothing happens, or if you enter your password and then just see the password screen again, this is most likely the problem.

You must have set up a Library Password to use Electronic Reserves. This is not the same as your ITD password, your CTools password, or any other UM authentication system. You should see the password screen the first time you click on the term listing; at the top of the password screen is a section where you can set a new password if you don't already have one. You can go directly to a screen to set up or change your library password here.

You can get more information on the Library Authentication method here.

DNS errors. If you receive an error similar to "Server not found, Firefox, IE, etc... can't find the server at login.umdl.umich.edu."

You also may be having problems with your domain name server (DNS) by using Comcast or any other outside Internet Service Provider (ISP.) We have created a workaround which you will need to execute to a file.

*To execute the command:

Open a text editor like Notepad or others which should be located under "Start/Programs/Accessories/Notepad." This is not to be confused with Microsoft Word. Open then locate the file: "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" and add the following line in the text: *with no quotes "141.211.175.129 login.umdl.umich.edu"

*Save, and then close the file.

Problems with finding items

If your professor informed you that course materials have been placed on reserve at the library, the following information may be of help:

Which library should I start with?

If your professor did not tell you a particular library to find reserves for your course, then be advised that there are a number of options to check. University Reserves is not the only reserves unit on campus, though we serve a variety of colleges and departments. Check this list of reserves units if you can't find your class through University Reserves.

What type of reserves am I looking for?

Physical reserves (also called traditional reserves) includes books and coursepacks that you can physically check out from a circulation desk. In general, your professor decides whether to put whole books and coursepacks on physical reserve, versus having parts of books or journals scanned. In addition, anything that is too long to scan is put on physical reserve.

Electronic reserves are for smaller things, like book chapters or individual journal articles or sample exams.

BORROWING RESERVES MATERIALS

University Reserves Circulation is located on the first floor in the lobby of the Shapiro Building. Reserve items are in a "closed stacks" area which means a circulation assistant will retrieve the item(s) for you. You may borrow two (2) reserve items at a time.

Reserve materials are shelved by call number. You can get the call number by:

  1. Checking the library's reserve web-page for your class and clicking browse class materials, the term, and class listed by alphabetical order.
  2. MIRLYN and enter the fields with search criteria for your class.

Then:

  1. Fill out a slip (available at the circulation desk) with the call number of the item(s) wanted
  2. Give the paper slip to the desk assistant at the Circulation Desk, who will then retrieve the item for you
  3. Check the book out using a valid library card (your M-Card); or read the book behind the desk

RETURNING RESERVES MATERIALS

Always return reserve materials to the library you checked them out from.

RESERVES FINES

Reserves services are designed to provide short-term use for high-demand materials. As such, fines are set as follows:

Reserves fines are $1.00 per hour.

Reserves fines accumulate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

FINDING YOUR COURSE'S RESERVES PAGE

Always start with MIRLYN, for these reasons:

  1. Reserves URLs change from term to term
  2. The Reserves course pages are generated by our database, and session-specific URL's are occasionally used
  3. URLs for courses are often long and complicated and prone to typos, and even something as small as using a capital letter instead of a lowercase can result in not getting to your page

In the upper right-hand corner, look for "Course Reserves":

Clicking the "Course Reserves" link will take you to "BASIC SEARCH : Course Reserves" with a drop down menu on the left hand side that defaults to the selection "Course Name word(s)." The drop down menu allows searches under "Instructor, Class, Course number, and etc..." Once you enter your search terms in the text box your results will be sorted by format. Electronic items will have a picture of a diskette and lightning bolt under "format" to the left side. Physical materials will have a book image and be located lower than Electronic items.

Click the text link located under "Title" which is towards the right for the appropriate class, section, and term you wish to view items for.

If you do not find your course at all in MIRLYN or the subsequent links is not opening/loading one of two things may have happened:

  1. your instructor has not requested any items to be put on reserve with University Reserves; perhaps, check with your professor.
  2. your instructor may have only recently placed the request(s) for Electronic Reserves and the processing may not yet be complete (If you run into a 404 Page Not Found error like this:)

Please check the button requesting a response, so we can direct you to the appropriate page or help you if a class was configured incorrectly.

FINDING ELECTRONIC RESERVES ON THE COURSE PAGE

Course pages all begin with the course information at the top.

Electronic reserves links are beneath the course info, listed as citations in alphabetical order by last name of Chapter Author.

VIEWING ELECTRONIC COURSE RESERVES

In general, electronic reserves are items in .pdf format (the exceptions are when we link to ejournals or other vendors UM subscribes to on the web).

By simply clicking on the link (embedded in the citation of your reading), the reading should automatically download for you.

If it does not, please refer to "Problems with Downloading and Reading Articles."

If you are viewing course reserve materials from public computing sites, instead of printing electronic reserve materials, you may choose to copy the files to a disk for use later with your personal computer.

First save the designated file to the desktop. Then copy the file from the desktop to your personal web space or thumb drive. Once you have everything you want copied to your personal drives/media, drag the desktop files which you created to the Trash and Empty Trash. Don't forget to eject your disk take it with you when you leave!

Alternatively, you can save directly to the appropriate drive when you click on the "save" button that appears in the browser upper right-hand corner when you open a .pdf file. Renaming the file something relevant to you is always a good idea as our file names are generated numbers and letters which no obvious relationship to the material.

If you still cannot locate your article, please contact university.reserves@umich.edu or call 764-7493.

Problems with downloading and reading articles

You must have either Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer or Preview to read or print PDF files. If you don't have a copy of the latest version of Acrobat Reader (which is free), you can download a copy from Adobe's web site here. Also, your web browser must be configured to handle PDF files (to either download them or open them using Acrobat). This is also usually set in "Preferences" or "Options" in your web browser.

Install Acrobat Reader

For assistance reading a PDF file using the Acrobat Reader, you may want to take the

Use Current Browsers

For best results to view and print PDF files, you should use as a minimum standard: Netscape 6.0 and Safari [Macintosh] or Netscape Navigator 6.0, Internet Explorer 5.0, Firefox, and Mozilla 1+[PC].

Viewing Location

Portions of the University Reserves website are restricted to use by University of Michigan faculty, staff and students. It is recommended to view documents from computers located on the University of Michigan campus: ITD Public computing sites, Residence Hall computing sites and the University Library public workstations.

Problems with Printing Articles

Printing Location

Lecture notes and homework solutions should print without difficulty.

Journal articles and book chapters are very large files and therefore require a sophisticated laser printer. It is advised that these files be printed from an ITD public computing site (such as Angell Hall or the Microcomputing Center at the Shapiro UGL), not from your personally owned printer.

Weird Printing Problems

These problems are caused by two disparate, seemingly innocuous things come into proximity: when a .pdf file is edited after scanning OR when orientation is changed during scanning (say, portrait to landscape) and a certain configuration is used to set up a printer. Though it is rare that the printing configuration meets the edited file, it does happen, and very strange printing results.

Report these problems immediately to our office by emailing university.reserves@umich.edu or calling 764-7493. We will rescan the item as soon as humanly possible, since fixing the printer configuration problem is difficult (if not impossible) (though do show the pages to someone in charge of the site and get reimbursed for the cost of printing).

If you can't wait for the item to be rescanned (as soon as humanly possible, remember, means that the book may be checked out to one of your classmates who also ran into the printing problem, so it may take us a few days), try another printer (and for best results, trade platforms, ie, move to a Mac if you had the problem on a PC). Otherwise, please come by the Undergrad and ask for assistance at the Reference Desk. Someone there will help you print a clean copy. Failing that, try the Reserves Office, upstairs.

Problems with missing pages, skewed items, etc.

To meet the high demand placed on University Reserves each term, items are scanned very quickly. While we double-check each item for legibility and missing pages, we cannot catch all problems, nor do we rescan crooked pages.

Egregious problems which result in illegibility, such as cut-off pages, missing blocks of text, faded print, etc. should be reported immediately to university.reserves@umich.edu. We will rescan as soon as humanly possible.
