National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse - Federal Geographic Data Committee's gateway for national and international data.

Geography Network Free Data Resources - free geographic data available from ESRI's geography network.

GIS Data Depot - claims to the largest free geo-spatial data depository on the web.

MapMart - Commercial site which includes free downloadable data.

GeoConnections Discovery Portal - includes maps, satellite images, data publications and other geospatial data provided by Canadian and international organizations

ArcData Online - ESRI's data site, offering free data as well as that available for purchase.

University of Michigan China Data Center's Data Warehouse - From the top of the main page, click on Data/Data WareHouse.

National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) 'Raster Roam' - Has downloadable VMAP1 and VMAP0 data (global digital data sets at scales of 1:250,000 and 1:1,000,000 respectively, produced by the NGA, formerly known as the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) among others. "Raster Roam is an Internet resource that provides public access to view and download imagery, maps, digital elevation data and other geographic information produced by the U.S. Government and commercial vendors." Has link to images showing coverage of VMAP1 and other data. NOTE: Another source, MapAbility, also has downloadable VMAP1 data and the interface is much simpler to use, though it does not appear to have an up-to-date set of available tiles.. Note that in both cases the downloaded files are quite large and take an extremely long time to unzip.

Digital Chart of the World Server- Digital Chart of the World data available for downloading from Penn State's server.

University of Maryland GLCF (Global Land Cover Facility) - Downloadable remote sensing imagery from around the world. Includes Landsat TM, Landsat Multispectral Scanner Data (MSS), and other imagery. To get to the Earth Science Data Interface from the GLCF page, click on "Download Data."

Earth Explorer (replaces USGS Global Land Information System)- Identify the satellite imagery you need here (note: this is not a site for downloading data, just identifying it).

USGS EROS Data Center Products - List of satellite imagery products available from the US government with links to the websites from which searches for these data can be made.

EOS Gateway - Search for and order earth science data products from NASA and affiliated centers.

SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) 90m Database - Processed Digital Elevation Model (DEM) files available for download as 5 degree x 5 degree tiles. Data hosted by the CGIAR (Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research) Consortium for Spatial Information.

National - U.S. and/or Canada

Map Layers Warehouse - The National Atlas of the US offers map layers in several formats for download at no cost.

USGS National Map Viewer - interactive map via which one can select data for the U.S. to download. Includes high resolution (approximately 1 foot) imagery for certain areas of the U.S (including Detroit), National Elevation Data (NED), National Land Cover Data (NCLD), and more. Also includes a link to Terraserver USA , a USGS site which enables the viewing (but not downloading) of high resolution imagery across the U.S.

National Map Seamless Data Distribution System - "The National Map Seamless Data Distribution System provides custom-generated digital products based on user specified geographic extents and user specified datasets. Seamless digital data is available to users in several optional formats for delivery via web downloads or CD media." Raster data extraction requests created with National Map Viewer are automatically processed by the Seamless Data Distribution System.

Geospatial Data Clearinghouse- links to data offered by the US Geological Survey.

TIGER Mapping Service- public geographic data made available by the US Census Bureau. Note that a variety of pre-processed TIGER data [TIGER/Line Files (UA Census 2000) and Cartographic Boundary Files (1999 Metropolitan Areas] are available in ESRI's shapefile format through the UM Spatial Data Catalog, in the "US Census Datasets" collection. These data are accessible to the public.

ESRI's "Census 2000 TIGER/Line data" page - links to census downloads and information.

Geogratis - Natural Resources Canada site that freely distributes geospatial data of Canada.

Geographic and Spatial Data by Geographic Coverage - list of data sources compiled by Geostat at the University of Virginia Library.

Starting the Hunt: Guide to Mostly On-Line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and Attribute Data - Includes lists for various U.S. states (from The Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at University of Arkansas)

Great Lakes Region

Illinois

Ill. Natural Resources Geospatial Data clearinghouse - Repository of various statewide natural resource data in GIF and Arc/Info files.

Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission - Data for the the larger Chicago metropolitan region.

Indiana

Indiana Spatial Data Portal - This website contains a variety of geospatial data of Indiana including Digital Ortho Phot Quadrangles(DOQQs) from the USGS, enhanced digital raster graphics (DRGs), and vector datasets.

Indiana Geological Survey - Provides downloadable gis data focusing on the Northwestern and Southwestern parts of the state but also includes more general state level information.

Electronic Atlas of Central Indiana - Assorted downloadable data sets.

Michigan

Michigan Geographic Data Library (MGDL) - From the Michigan Center for Geographic Information. Incorporates the Spatial Data Library of the Department of Natural Resources and other state data providers. Extensive spatial data for all of Michigan.

Michigan Maps and Information - State, county, and city data for Michigan available for download as Arc/Info coverages and Excel files, from Remote Sensing and GIS Research and Outreach Services at Michigan State University.

Minnesota

Minnesota Planning-Data & Maps - Holds state wide data which is organized by city, county, and region.

Minnesota Legislative GIS Office - Provides information on state voting redistricting.

Minnesota Geographic Data Clearinghouse - Gives links to various sites that contain Minnesota GIS data sets.

New York

New York State GIS Clearinghouse - Provides information from a variety of state agencies including both raster and vector data sets.

Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository - Online repository providing geospatial data and metadata for New York State.

Geographic Information Systems and Mapping Operations - New York Metropolitan Area's largest GIS users group from city, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and the private sectorate. (server no longer available as of 1/22/03)

Ohio

GIS Support Center - Includes data sets in the following formats: Digital Line Graphs (DLGs), Digital Orthophoto Quarterquadrangles (DOQQs), Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs), and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).

ODNR Division of Water GIS Data - Offers links to a variety of water resource related state information.

Ontario

Geogratis - Natural Resources Canada site that freely distributes geospatial data of Canada.

Pennsylvana

Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access - The clearinghouse for geographical data for the state funded by the Department of Environmental Protection.

Quebec

Geogratis - Natural Resources Canada site that freely distributes geospatial data of Canada.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin Land Information Clearinghouse - Links to various sites that contain digital spatial data for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Land Information Program, Division of Intergovernmental Relations, State of Wisconsin - Provides a detailed list of on-line providers of GIS information in the state.

Southeast Michigan

City of Ann Arbor Geographic Information System (GIS) Program

Livingston County - no downloadable data as of 6/18/03.

Macomb County GIS Services - no downloadable data as of 8/18/2005.

Monroe County, Michigan - no downloadable data as of 6/18/03.

Oakland County Enterprise GIS - no downloadable data (as of 3/30/04), but has information about data and a new search interface for finding data.

Southeast Michigan Council of Governments - Has information about data, but not downloadable data (as of 6/18/03). Also has links to member websites.

St. Clair County Geographic Information System - Has information about data, but not downloadable data (as of 6/18/03).
