Numeric Data Sources for University of Michigan Users

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)

ICPSR is a unit of the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. ICPSR is the largest archive of computer-readable social science data in the world; its data holdings number over 5,700 titles. ICPSR is an organization of member institutions working together to acquire and preserve social science data, to provide open and equitable access to these data, and to promote effective data use.

ICPSR has data in the areas of child care and early education, criminal justice, demography, economics, education, gerontology, history,
political science, public health, sociology, substance abuse and mental health, and many others.

Webstract

Webstract is the name of the software used to access many economic databases maintained by Global Insight. Webstract software must be installed on a computer running Windows before it can be used. For information and installation instructions, please go to http://www.lib.umich.edu/nsds/numeric_data/webstract.html . Quick Tips provides a guide to searching. Please note: Webstract is licensed only for the Ann Arbor Campus.

National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)

Many datasets distributed by NCHS are available with extractions capabilities via CDC Wonder. Others are available from ICPSR. The University of Michigan Library has made several datasets available via the web. In addition, many of the datasets from NCHS are distributed on CD-ROM through the Depository Library Program and are listed in MIRLYN.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research

As a member of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, the University is able to acquire datasets from their collection on request. We receive a limited number of datasets per year which are available on a first come, first served basis. For more information on acquiring data from the Roper Center, send email to Jen Green, Numeric and Spatial Data Librarian.

The Sociometrics Social Science Electronic Data Library (SSEDL)

The Sociometrics Corporation has compiled this library of datasets from various studies; the datasets cover seven major categories, including AIDS/STD; Disability in the US; American Family; Adolescent Pregnancy and Pregnancy Prevention; Aging; Maternal Drug Abuse and Contextual Data. The SSEDL is also available on a set of CD-ROMS, which are on reserve at the Social Work Library.
