Welcome to the Numeric and Spatial Data Service's Online GIS Request Form.
- A variety of geospatial data are downloadable via the University Library Digital Spatial Data Catalog. In addition, you may use our online GIS request form to send a request for GIS data files in shapefile format (for use with ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS) and your customized data sets.
- Data provided by the Numeric and Spatial Data Services is proprietary and is available to University of Michigan students, faculty and staff only.
Proceed immediately to the GIS Online Request Form.
People requiring GIS resources and/or services may submit requests
via this online reference interview form. For those not familiar with
GIS requests, submitting this form will likely result in some kind
of email discussion to clarify your needs, rather than immediate
fulfillment of the request. Library staff will let you know what kind
of information will enable them to fill the request.
While this form can be used to submit requests of any kind, it is primarily intended for those requiring census demographic data and GIS boundary files. Data will be prepared for use in ArcView mapping software.
Information You Need to Provide
When submitting the online request, users should have the following information available:
- Extent (or scope) of data required: U.S., state, county.
- Level of detail into which data should be separated. For example, if requesting data for the state of Michigan, should it be divided by county, census tract, city, etc. If the data requested is for Macomb county, do you want it divided by block group?
- Date requested: for most census data requests, data from before 1980 are not available in formats compatible with use with Geographic Information System software. However, staff may be able to direct you to additional resources for historical data, so please include this on your request.
- Demographic data needed for the defined area, such as race, median income, or age. You should also specify the specific group desired (which age group? which income level? which race?).
When data sets are finalized, staff will place data files into a directory
that you can access from your web browser. Information on how to access
the information will be sent, along with notification of its completion,
to the person requesting the files.

- Most requests will likely be processed within 48 hours. However, because the library does not have staff specially designated to attend to such requests, the library cannot guarantee a specific turnaround time.
