Types of data: Socioeconomic statistics and population Census data at national, province, city,
county and township levels by years or months; various GIS maps of China; various feature maps; daily China news; and many
reference yearbooks.
Services: Online database subscription service, China data on CD or book orders, and customized data service.
Archivability: Yes
Eligibility for use: Online data query is available. Some GIS maps and other datasets are available for free download.
Data access: Most data are accessible online.
Fees: Fees are applied for individual orders for CDs or books; Free access to daily China news and many other online
data sets; Users pay annual subscription fee for the online China data service (http://chinadataonline.org/); Each university
library can apply a free single user account for the Online China database.
CSCAR (Center for Statistical Consultation and Research)

Services: CSCAR is a service and research unit of the University of Michigan, administratively
located in the Office of the Vice President for Research. Its staff provides statistical services to faculty, primary
researchers, graduate students and staff of the University for up to one hour per week at no charge. CSCAR emphasizes an
integrated, comprehensive statistical consulting service, covering all aspects of a quantitative research project ranging
from the initial study design through to the presentation of the final research conclusions.
Fees: Usually none, but for research projects that require more statistical services than CSCAR can offer without
charge, the staff is available to submit joint, collaborative research grant proposals or to enter into subcontract
agreements. Such agreements might cover some or all of the various analysis aspects of the research, including
non-University work.
Davidson Data Center and Network (DDCN)

Types of data: Socio-economic micro and macro data for transition and emerging market economies. Some
of our most popular data sets include well documented enterprise surveys from Bulgaria, Slovakia, Russia and China,
retrospective labor force surveys from Czech Republic and household surveys from Costa Rica. The DDCN is also a data resource
portal with more than 400 data links.
Services: Provides a user friendly, fully searchable database on transition and emerging market economies. DDCN archives
and provides FREE access to socio-economic micro and macro data from these economies.

Services: First stop on campus for tabulated data, provides help in identifying
sources, very basic data interpretation and help with manipulating spreadsheets, downloading shape files from Geolytics, and
PUMS queries using PDQ Explore. Identifies potential numeric data when needed and refers to other campus specialists. Provides
instructional support for class assignments given 2 weeks+ lead time. University liaison to Census Bureau's State Data
Center program.
Eligibility for use: Campus and general public.

Who we are: ICPSR is a unit of the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.
ICPSR is the largest archive of computer-readable social science data in the world; its data holdings number over 5,700
titles. ICPSR is an organization of member institutions working together to acquire and preserve social science data, to provide
open and equitable access to these data, and to promote effective data use.
Types of data: ICPSR has data in the areas of child care and early education, criminal justice, demography,
economics, education, gerontology, history, political science, public health, sociology, substance abuse and mental

Eligibility for use: Qualified, confidentiality-abiding researchers with projects approved for access to
confidential, unpublished Census Bureau data via Title 13, sec. 9 U.S.C. No restrictions on university affiliation
or nationality.
Data access: Access is provided after the approval a proposal to the MCRDC and the U.S. Census. Interested researchers
should contact the mcrdc (mcrdc@umich.edu) for information about available data sets and the proposal
approval process.
Fees: Projects are charged a laboratory fee to cover the costs of use of the MCRDC. Projects sponsored by the NSF
are currently exempt from fees. Researchers from units of the University of Michigan who have supported the MCRDC through
cost sharing may also be eligible for a waiver of fees. Prospective researchers should contact the MCRDC for information
about fees.
Mitsui Emerging Markets Information Source

Types of data available: MEMIS is a one-stop shopto find sources offirm-level financial data on emerging
markets. Specifically,theMEMISprovides information on where to findfinancial statement corporate governance, market,
and miscellaneous data relevant to financial research.
Services provided: MEMIS is database with a flexible web-based search engine.
Eligibility for use: For the first year, anyone with an email address.
Data access: MEMIS is open to all for now.In Septemberit will be accessible to anyone with a University of
Michigan 'Friend' account. These accounts will be available in September through the University of Michigan
main web site to anyone with an email address.
Fees: None for the first year
Numeric & Spatial Data Services

Types of data:
Numeric data from ICPSR, the Roper Center, Global Insight, the US Census.
Spatial data from organizations such as ESRI, USGS, US Census, City of Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, as well as from
researchers on the UM Campus.
Services: Supports the use of spatial data, numeric data, and statistics in research and teaching. For example,
we assist in locating and acquiring digital data sets, educate patrons in the use of statistical and geographic information
systems (GIS) software; maintain an online searchable
catalog of digital spatial data, whose content focuses on data of potential interest to the UM community; acquire,
store, and provide access to digital spatial and numeric data sets in a repository accessible via the online catalog;
provide instructional support. Provides a secure computing lab in which to work on short-or long-term projects as well
as staff assistance.
Data repository services: Provides repository services for digital geospatial data for the UM Campus.
Eligibility for use: Campus and general public

Population Studies Center Data Services

Types of data: Demographic – includes fertility, vital statistics, life-course, census,
non-census state/city/county characteristics
Services: acquisition, data tutorials, restricted data contracts, archival services, data pages, programming
Archivability: Archive data and/or help deposit data with ICPSR; data pages for PSC data collection efforts
Eligibility for use: No restrictions on consultation services for use of census data. Minimal consultation
service (no programming, archiving) on demographic data for the public.

Program for Education and Evaluation in Responsible Research and Scholarship

Services: PEERRS is a web-based instruction and certification program for members of the University community
engaged in or associated with research. All UM faculty, staff and students are invited to use the modules and certification
tests to improve their knowledge and awareness of responsible research practices and administered by the
Office of the Vice President for Research.
Spatial Analysis and GIS (CSCAR)

Services: Geographic Information Science (GIS), and spatial analysis services. CSCAR offers workshops on spatial analysis
and GIS. GIS workshops, such as Introduction to ArcView GIS and Using ArcGIS are offered year-round. Training sessions may be
customized for specific applications upon request. Visit the UM-GIS web page for current offerings and availability.
Eligibility for use: Faculty, primary researchers, graduate students and staff of the University.
Fees: Usually none, but for research projects that require more spatial analysis services than CSCAR can offer
without charge, our staff is available to submit joint, collaborative research grant proposals or to enter into subcontract
