Watching gas prices rise 15-cents overnight will frighten the hardiest of souls. Fight back with a little information.

The University of Michigan Documents Center has just launched its Gasoline Prices web page at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/dn08/dn08gas.html

The web page is filled with statistics on pump and crude oil prices, exchange rates, and oil reserves. (Did you know there are 42 gallons to a barrel of oil?) It is also addresses solutions to high prices from supply and demand to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, a gas tax holiday, and regulating commodity exchanges. (In case you are wondering, there IS no existing windfall profits tax!)

New Resource: Trade Statistics & Payments Statistics

The University Library is pleased to report that the International Monetary Fund databases Direction of Trade Statistics (DOT) and Balance of Payments Statistics (BOP) are now available. These two databases complement the flagship IMF database, International Financial Statistics Online.

The DOT and BOP applications can be accessed by clicking on "DOT" or "BOP" in the upper right corner of the IFS portal.

More about DOT and BOP:
The Direction of Trade database contains time series data from 1980. DOT Statistics provides critical data on the value of merchandise exports and imports between each country and all its trading partners. It reports total bilateral and multilateral exports and imports aggregated at national or regional group level.

The Balance of Payments Statistics database contains time series data from 1948. BOP Statistics summarizes, for a specific period, the economic transactions of an economy with the rest of the world. It reports total goods, services, factor income, and current transfers an economy receives from or provides to the rest of the world as well as capital transfers and changes in each economy's external financial claims and liabilities.

If you have questions about these resources, please contact the Documents Center Ask Us service.

These maps were created in April 2008 by Spatial and Numeric Data (SAND) Services, part of the MLibrary. Hometown maps are based on registrar data. Maps showing the destinations of graduates are based on data collected through an online survey, completed by approximately 2500 of 8600 graduates.
