Who can put items on reserve?

Instructors or GSI's may submit reserve requests.

How do I put items on reserve?

Option 1: Bring books, articles, or personal copies to the Music Library circulation desk.
a) Complete a Music Course Reserves Form and submit with items in hand. Please note that personal copies will be available to patrons for library use only (no overnight circulation) unless otherwise specified.
b) Please drop off reserves to a supervisor if possible.

Option 2: Submit your list of items in person to the Music Library for Philip Heslip or by email to music.reserves@umich.edu

a) List should include author, title and call number for requested items.
b) Complete and accurate information will result in quicker processing.
All course reserve requests must include:
  • Instructor's name
  • Instructor's email address
  • Course name and number (including section number if applicable)
  • Semester the course is being offered
  • Date submitted
When should I submit reserves requests?

You may submit a request for reserves at any time, but the sooner we receive your request the better! During peak periods (mid-August through early October and mid-December to early February) our goal is to process reserve materials in 2 to 5 days. Under certain circumstances, however, it can take 3 to 5 weeks to fully process an item. It is strongly recommended that reserves requests be received at least 3 weeks prior to the beginning of the term. At non-peak times, requests may be processed in 1-2 days.

How can I expedite the process?

Reserves requests will be processed in the order in which they are received. At peak times, however, it is helpful to include the "date needed by" to expedite the processing time. Please note that items received in-hand will be processed more quickly than requests submitted as a list.

How many items can I put on reserve?

Due to the number of reserves requests received by the Music Library and limited space, the suggested limit is 75 items. You may rotate items as needed, i.e., take off items already covered in class and put new ones on in their place.

What items can/can't I put on reserve?

All normally circulating items may be placed on reserve, as well as research copies, bound journals and personal copies. Reference books and current journals cannot be placed on reserve. Individual journal articles should be made available through electronic reserves or photocopied and placed on reserve. We will not hold both the bound volume of a journal as well as a photocopied article.
