Wild turkey in the Audubon Room
John James Audubon’s magnificent male wild turkey, the first image in volume one of the University of Michigan Library’s double-elephant folio of Birds of America, is currently on display in the MLibrary Gallery Audubon Room (Room 100 of the Hatcher Graduate Library).
The entire eight-volume set of Birds of America (435 plates in all, each with a different bird) is on permanent display in the Audubon Room, one volume at a time, with the page turned to a new image every week. Each volume is shown in its entirety before moving on to the next. Turning volume one back to the wild turkey image is an exception to the rule, says Peggy Daub, Director of the Special Collections Library. “We’ve had several requests to show the turkey for the holidays,” says Daub, “and since volume one is about to be rotated out of the Audubon Room, and won’t be seen again for quite some time, we decided to do it.”
The wild turkey will be shown through Sunday, November 28.
