Staff Manual: Breaks

Revised 03/96.

Meal Breaks

Policy

Employees working four or more consecutive hours are entitled to an unpaid meal break period of at least 30 minutes, to be scheduled by the Library unit. Since meal breaks are required, supervisors may not allow staff members to skip or unduly postpone them, nor may staff members compensate for late arrival or early departure by working through their meal break.

Process

Employee

Schedule meal break after consulting with supervisor.

Coffee Breaks

Policy

The University offers its staff members a 15-minute paid rest period for every four consecutive hours worked. Breaks should be scheduled according to the Library unit’s needs and are to be taken approximately in the middle of each four-hour work segment.

Coffee breaks cannot be used to extend a lunch hour, compensate for late arrival or early departure, or accumulate if not taken during the appropriate work period.
