The Library Diversity Council (LDC) sponsors many events, ranging from the annual Diversity Celebration to a variety of speakers, panel presentations, film screenings, discussion groups and more. We also hold regular meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. All library staff are welcome to attend meetings. In addition, the calendar below also featrues selected diversity events on campus and in our community.

Diversity Celebration on May 11th
Wednesday, May 11th in the Library Gallery (Hatcher Room 100), 2:00-4:00 PM for this year’s diversity celebration, Where Are You From?, we took the opportunity to appreciate the diversity of the Library Staff. Aside from some really great food we had different activities to give people a better understanding of the many different heritages represented by our colleagues.

"the story of Maria de Jesus (13) and her cousin Rene (12) as they attempt to cross the [Mexican-American Border Region] alone to reunite with their mothers in the Midwest. Focusing on minors crossing through the Sonora Desert area in Nogales, Arizona, this film explores every detail of these children's journey as well as the journeys of other children we meet on the way"

MLibrary welcomes Dr. Bertice Berry, an award-winning entertainer, lecturer and comedian. Growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, the sixth of seven children, Bertice was told by a high-school teacher that she was "not college material." She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Jacksonville University in Florida, and eventually earned a Ph. D. in Sociology from Kent State University, all by the age of 26. Diversity Committee Elections 2010 - We need YOU!
- May 12th-May26th: Nominate yourself or someone else for a 3 year membership on the committee by sending a message to ldc-lib@umich.edu.
- We will need a short statement of interest from all candidates; in addition, the election ballot will include Drupal profile photo (if available) and a link to the nominee's profile
- There are 4 open positions on the committee
- Election will be open June 1st-11th
Join us on Wednesday, May 12th in the Library Gallery from 2:00 - 4:00 pm for a A Breach of Good Manners: 90 Years of Women’s Suffrage. We will take the opportunity to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Take a look back at voting and election history, enjoy good food and the company of your colleagues, and consider running for a spot on the Library Diversity Committee yourself (our own elections will be coming up soon). And for those of you who have been attending Diversity Passport events, it’s time to pick up your prize! We hope to see you all there!

March 17, 2010: Amreeka (Arabic for America), a film that traces the life of a single mother with her teenage son as they relocate from the West bank to Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Written and directed by Cherien Dabis, starring Nisreen Faour and Melkar Muallem. Discussion after the film led by Carol Bardenstein, Dept of Near Eastern Studies. NOTE: the date for this program was changed from 3/18 to 3/17.

Bright Circle - Movie Screening and Introduction by Producers Russ Bolinger and Shawn Kakuk

Bright Circle explores the history of Native American Indians’ participation and achievement in athletics. The 19th century saw the founding of “Indian Schools” – boarding schools that brought Native American children together from many different tribes, most often against their will. The objective was assimilation. The motto was, “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” In addition to the insistence on removal of tribal customs and conventions, the “Indian Schools” focused their male population on sports, particularly football. Unintentionally, these institutions produced some of the best athletes and teams of the late 19th and early 20th century. Jim Thorpe, honored as the Greatest Athlete of the 20th century, is one example. Members of his family appear in the film. More information at http://www.lib.umich.edu/gallery/events/bright-circle
