Librarians' Forum Meeting

This Wednesday, September 21st is the first Librarians’ Forum meeting of the academic year.  The theme of the meeting is Forum Fundamentals and we’ll start with some basic, logistical information (who are the officers of the forum, how do you contact us, how do you find out more information about the Forum, etc.).  We then plan on tackling the issue of the purpose of the Forum and who should be members.

The current bylaws limit membership in the Forum to librarians and describes the Forum as providing for discussion of professional issues and to promote the participation of librarians in University Library affairs. The question of expanding the scope of the Forum to include library staff comes up with some regularity. We plan on holding a web-based vote of the membership after the meeting to decide whether we do want to expand membership. But, first, we will discuss the matter during this meeting. We’ve asked Paul Courant to participate in the discussion to provide his perspective on the issue but will also welcome comments from librarians and library staff as well.

The formal part of Wednesday’s meeting begins at 9am, but there will be coffee and donuts available beginning at 8:30am if you’d like to come in earlier for conversation with colleagues.

Librarians' Forum Meeting

The topic for this Librarians' Forum meeting is faculty status, faculty governance and librarians and we'll have four panelists who will discuss their perspective on the topic:

Bob Fraser, Associate Director for Scholarly Resources at Mardigian Library, UM-Dearborn and recipient of the Jackie Lawson Memorial Faculty Governance Award discussing faculty governance at the University of Michigan

Jon Rothman, Head, Library Systems Office discussing his experience participating in faculty governance at U-M, most notably as a member and then chair of the Civil Liberties Board

Beau Case, Field Librarian for Classical Studies, discussing his experience as a tenure-track librarian at Ohio State University

Kathleen Folger, Chair of Librarians' Forum , discussing the role of Librarians' Forum in the faculty governance structure and the issues Forum has addressed over the years.

By the way, a recent article in the journal Library Philosophy and Practice provides a good introduction and overview of the issue of faculty status for librarians. You don't need to read the article to participate in the discussion on Wednesday, it's just a good starting point if you're looking for more information on the topic.

The formal part of Wednesday’s meeting begins at 9 am, but there will be coffee and donuts available beginning at 8:30 am if you’d like to come in earlier for conversation with colleagues.

As update on last month's meeting when we discussed expanding Librarians' Forum to include all library staff, we had a lively discussion with many good points made in support of both sides of the question--for library staff members who weren't able to attend, minutes and a video recording of the meeting are available online. In the end, members of Forum Board agreed that addressing issues related to staff communication and representation goes beyond what Librarians' Forum is capable of doing. Paul Courant indicated at the meeting that library administration was willing to work with library staff on issues of communication and representation.  At the last senior managers meeting it was announced that Executive Council has decided to poll staff on the issue of staff representation. So, Forum is going to focus its efforts on its responsiblities as the Library's faculty governance agency as described in the Principles of Faculty Involvement in Institutional and Academic Unit Governance at the University of Michigan, 2nd ed. and allow library administration to take the lead in addressing issues of staff communication and representation.

Librarians' Forum Meeting

At last month's meeting we considered the role of librarians in faculty and unit governance from a historical perspective; this month we'd like to take a more current view on these topics. In addition to updates from librarians serving on faculty governance committees, we'll be talking about some of the current activities of Librarians' Forum, including updates on what's happening with promotion, salaries, and travel. We'd also like to get feedback from members on what we should be doing in a couple of areas we have identified as needing attention (the relationship of Forum to the Committee on Funding for Library Staff Research and Creative Projects and mentoring). We'd also like to hear from members about other areas Forum should be focusing its attention on this year.

Librarians' Forum Meeting

In addition to a panel session on marketing and communication with library colleagues, University Librarian Paul Courant will be joining us to discuss two issues Forum brought to the Executive Council—librarian work schedules and research leaves. In order to accommodate the full agenda, we’re extending the meeting time. We’ll meet from 9-11 am. If you’d like to come in earlier for conversation with colleagues, coffee and donuts will be available beginning at 8:30 am.

The first part of the meeting will be the panel session:

Lynne Raughley, Interim Communications Director, along with Kirsten Neelands and Mary Morris from the Marketing and Communications Department, will discuss their vision for marketing the library to the campus and beyond.

Amanda Peters, Chair of the Instructional Marketing and Outreach Task Force, will present current and upcoming projects related to marketing the library’s diverse instructional offerings.

Jamie Vander Broek, Digital Learning Services Librarian, will discuss opportunities for digital marketing of the library’s myriad services, resources, and events.

The conversation with Paul Courant will begin at 10 am.

  • Academic Services Board
  • Vice Provost & Associate Deans Group
  • Privacy Oversight Committee
  • Cultural Collection Council

The formal part of this meeting will be from 9:00 am -10:30 am, but there will be coffee, tea and doughnuts available beginning at 8:30, if you would like to arrive before the meeting for casual conversation and sharing.

Librarians' Forum Meeting

After business reports and updates, this progarm will feature speakers from LIT, Open Michigan, MPublishing, and Deep Blue. Our panel will look toward the future of the library as a place where information is not just stored, but created.

  • Korey Jackson (MPublishing) will discuss how new author-centered software and hardware has already disrupted the cultural and economic enterprise of publishing. With this disruption in mind, he will address MPublishing’s role in the decade to come as one that involves both production and education. MPublishing’s mission is not only to create new kinds of publications, but also to teach faculty, students, and staff how to take advantage of innovative authoring technologies and platforms. Of course education and advocacy go hand-in-hand: any tech-oriented education will also need to communicate the institutional, legal and ethical implications of these new modes of publishing. In other words, MPublishing seeks to foster a more robust version of what might be called "supply-side information literacy."

  • Jim Ottaviani (Deep Blue) will talk about how Deep Blue has evolved over the years, with emphasis on how the conversation on campus related to it has moved towards a broader discussion and awareness of what it means to provide access to research and what rights authors need to keep in mind as they publish. He'll also talk about how we think we can move forward to preserve more of our scholarship, make our data more accessible, and complement HathiTrust, MPublishing, and Open.Michigan in ways that work for all scholars.

  • Emily Puckett Rogers (Open Michigan) will introduce Open.Michigan and its role in supporting open teaching and learning practices on campus and in supporting publicly accessible scholarly work at U-M. She will discuss how emerging forms of teaching and learning at U-M will be facilitated by a semantic web, peer teaching and learning, and multimodal open resource creation. These aspects of the academic landscape at U-M and other institutions can and must be facilitated by creators of information at all levels of scholarship.

  • John Wilkin (LIT) will talk about the aspects of HathiTrust's mission and work that position it to play a role in "library-created" information, as a "creator of information," the progress that's been made in that space already, and what he hopes might be possible in the way of creating a landscape that brings much of academic publishing into the "library curated" domain.

The formal part of this meeting will be from 9:00 am -10:30 am, but there will be coffee, tea and doughnuts available beginning at 8:30, if you would like to arrive before the meeting for casual conversation and sharing.

Please join us Wednesday morning in the Library Gallery for the next Librarians’ Forum meeting. After business reports and updates, Darlene Nichols, Librarian for Diversity Initiatives & Programs, will lead a conversation about staff development.  Darlene will discuss her role in promoting staff development initiatives and will invite Forum members to share their thoughts on the future of a Library mentoring program.  We hope to explore how Library staff can continue to grow professionally in order to achieve the Library's mission.
