Step-by-step instructions for exporting from EbscoHost:

  1. Do a search as usual in PsycInfo/PsycArticles, MagillOnLiterature, or AltHealthWatch.
  2. Add articles to your Folder by clicking on the Add icon to the right of the citation in the results list. The icon will change to show the citation has been added to your Folder.
  3. When you are finished searching, click on the folder icon labeled Folder Has Items at the top of the page. This will take you to the Folder Contents page.
    folder has items.
  4. In the Folder Contents page, choose Save at the top of the results. This will take you into the Save Manager page.
  5. On the Save Manager page, choose the Bibliographic Manager tab that is located at the top of square in the middle of the page. This is the direct export menu.
  6. Follow the instructions below to send references to your EndNote library, using either Direct Export or Manual Export to EndNote.

Direct Export to EndNote

  1. Choose "Citations in Direct Export Format".
  2. EndNote should start up. If it doesn't, or if you are prompted to choose to save or open the file, skip to step 7 (below).
  3. Choose the appropriate library or database. Your records should now appear in your EndNote library.
  4. After selecting Direct Export to EndNote you may receive a message asking you to Choose an Application or Save as File.
  5. If it wants to open with "risfile", just click okay. The Direct Export to EndNote should work as planned.
  6. If it does not already know what application to open with, or if it wants to open with another application, just select Save as File. Be sure to save as a plain text file (.txt).
  7. Go back to EndNote, go to the File menu, and select Import.
  8. Click on the Choose File button, navigate to the text file that contains your citations and click on Open.
  9. In the Import Option menu, select the RIS filter. Click on the Import button. The records will be added to your EndNote library.

Manual Import to EndNote.

  1. Sometimes the Direct Export process just doesn't work. This is, unfortunately, particularly common on Macs. Luckily, there is yet one more option that should work on any computer with any edition of EndNote higher than version 5.
  2. Instead of Direct Export, select the radio button labeled "Generic bibliographic management software", then click the "Save" button.
  3. Select File then Save As from your browser's toolbar above. Be sure to save as a plain text file (.txt
  4. Go back to EndNote, go to the File menu, and select Import
  5. Click on the Choose File button, and navigate to the text file that contains the citations you want to import and click on Open. In the Import Option menu, select the EBSCO filter that is appropriate for the database you were searching. (For example, if you were using PsycINFO, you'd use the "PsycINFO(EBSCO)" filter.
  6. Click on the Import button. The records will be added to your EndNote library.

Note - if you save as a text file after selecting Direct Export format in EBSCO, you must use the RIS filter to import to EndNote. If you save as a text file after selecting "Citations in a format that can be uploaded to bibliographic management software", you'll need the EBSCO filter appropriate to your database.
