Steps in this exercise:



Create a New File

  • Create a new file by selecting File and New.

  • Name the document - transparent_gif.psd.

  • In the Image Size box:

    • Assign a width and height of 7 and 4 inches, respectively.

    • Select a Resolution of 72 pixels/inch.

    • Select RGB as the Mode.

  • In the Contents box:

    • Check Transparent.

  • Click OK.

TIP

72 dpi is the maximum resolution viewable on a computer screen.
Web-only images should generally be saved at this resolution, or they will take too long to download.

 

 



Add Content to the Image

  • Select the Text Tool text tool, and type your name (use a font size of 80 to 110 points).

Save the Transparent GIF

  • Go to File and Save and save the file. You now have a template you can use to make new buttons. All you have to do is open up the document and change the text. You can hide the old layers by pressing on the Photoshop eye in the Layers palette.

  • To make this image ready for the web, it needs to be a GIF or JPEG.

  • Save it as a GIF. Go to File and Save As and choose GIF as the File Type. The Indexed Color window opens. Click OK.

Cropping the Image

  • Select the Crop Tool crop tool.

  • Click on the image and drag around the part of the image you wish to crop. A rectangle will appear with a small square in each corner and on the sides at the midpoints. Adjust the size of the box by moving these squares.

  • Press Enter to crop the image.
