iv, V-1 (9), 43 V(439), V-1 (448) ; chiefly quinions ; a few lines on p.685 are left blank, unmarked ; last three leaves left blank ; catchwords present ; foliation in red ink, Hindu-Arabic, numerals, (begins with ۱ on fol.2, mistakenly skips ٤۲٤) ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes some flyleaves, mistakenly skips two pages between pp.441-442).

Layout:

Written in 23 lines per page ; frame-ruled.

Script:

Naskh ; neat Ottoman Turkish hand ; partially seriffed with right-sloping head-serif mainly on lām, occasionally ṭāʼ and other letters bearing vertical shafts, free-standing alif usually left serifless ; effect of slight tilt to the left ; often closed counters ; dot of final nūn often assimilated with bowl.

Decoration:

Frame consisting of gold band with black fillets surrounds written area on incipit and facing page ; elsewhere written area surrounded by simple rule-border in two red fillets ; text rubricated with section headings, keywords, overlining, etc. in red ; words for rubrication noted in margins.

Support:

European laid paper with 12 laid lines per cm. and chain lines (horizontal) spaced roughly 27 mm. apart ; heavy and well-burnished ; angel with hand lifted watermark ; many loose quires.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in green to brown leather (spine, interior of fore-edge flap, doublure hinges and turn-ins in red leather) ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in paper (pink-tinted) ; upper and lower covers bear stamped (with red leather recessed onlays) and gold-painted central mandorla with pendants and corner pieces (vegetal design, remotely similar to Déroche class. OAi 10) with stamped and gold-painted roll border consisting of a series of s-shaped stamps ; design carries on to envelope flap where it is much better preserved ; sewn in dark blue thread, two stations ; chevron endbands in red and white, detaching and nearly lost ; in poor condition with flap completely detached, much abrasion of cover designs, lifting of leather, delamination of boards, some leather burn, etc.

As appears in colophon on fol.445a (p.891), copied by Muṣṭafá ibn Sayyidī [Sīdī?] ibn Maḥmūd. Transcription finished ("wa-kāna al-farāgh min hādhihi al-nuskhah al-mubārakah...") 15 Rabīʻ II 985 H [July 1577 M].

Ownership and History:

Bookplate of British Museum, London on inner front cover,"British Museum, London. No. 47. Commentary on Kuduri." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "501" in Western numerals on front flyleaf ; on paper pasted on fol.1a (p.5), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا بشرط لا يخرج من دار الكتب الذي بنيته في اتصال داري الا لعلماء نفس ارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; a few marginal corrections ; inscription on head-edge of textblock, virtually illegible.
