Written in 25 lines per page ; frame-ruled.


Nastaʻlīq ; elegant hand in a thin line ; serifless with slight effect of words descending to baseline and tilt to the right, elongation and somewhat exaggerated thickness of horizontal strokes.

non-European (Persian) laid paper (characterized in inscription on inner front flyleaf (p.3) as "كاغذ ایرانی") with 7-8 laid lines per cm. (vertical, somewhat indistinct, curving) and chain lines occasionally visible, dark cream to beige in color, thin and sturdy, well-burnished.


Boards covered in light orange-brown leather decorated in "marbled calf" manner ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in light-blue surface-dyed wove paper ; spine in dark green and brown leather, gold-stamped with decorative bands and title "ROOZUT OL SUFA 5" ; edges of text block red-flecked ; sewn in white thread over recessed cords ; Western style worked endbands, fair condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with minor abrasion and deterioration of leather, spine leather detaching, minor delamination of boards, etc.

Lacks dated colophon ; dated seal impression provides only rough terminus ante quem of 1723 ; paper, etc. may suggest late 17th century.

Ownership and History:

On inner front flyleaf (p.3), inscription with title, script, paper, contents for this volume, and listing of the three former owners whose seal impressions (مهر) appear in the manuscript as well as Muḥammad Shāh Pādishāh ( محمد شاه پادشاه ) ; several former owners' marks on 'title page' (p.5) including statement and rectangular seal impression in name of one Naʻīm Allāh Khān, ownership statement (dated 21 Muḥarram [?]) accompanied by octagonal seal impression dated 1135 [1722 or 23] in name of one Shams al-Dawlah Bahādur Mutahavvir [Mathūr] Jang (شمس الدوله بهادر متهور جنگ ), and a few other effaced statements ; oval seal impression at close on p.434 in name of one Luṭf Allāh Khān Bahādur Ṣādiq (لطف الله خان بهادر صادق) ; fairly clean copy.
