Fine copy of the gloss by Saʻd Allāh ibn ʻĪsá ibn Amīr Khān, known as Saʻdī Chalabī or Saʻdī Afandī (Sadi Çelebi or Sadi Efendi, d.1538 or 9) upon al-ʻInāyah, the commentary by Akmal al-Dīn al-Babārtī (d.1384) on al-Hidāyah, the celebrated commentary by ʻAlī ibn Abī Bakr al-Marghīnānī (d. 593/1197) on his compendium of Ḥanafī law, Bidāyat al-mubtadiʼ fī furūʻ al-fiqh al-Ḥanafī. Arranged in two halves (النصف الاول والنصف الثانى) or volumes in one.

"الحمد لله لمن لا غاية لعنايته الازلية ولا نهاية لهدايته العلية ... وبعد فان العبد الفقير الى عناية الله المستعان المدعو بعبد الرحمن يقول ايها الاخوان هذا نبذ من فوائد الاستاذ النافع والسعد البادع ... سعد بن عيسى بن امير خان افاض الله تعالى عليهم ينابيع الرحمة والغفران ... فوجدت من كتبه كتاب العناية للهداية في يد بعض الورثة ... ثم وجدت من كتبه كتاب الهداية في سلك ملك بعض الاعيان فسألت عنه ذلك الكتاب بطريق العارية فارسل الي بلا امتنان فلما يسر الله الفوز بهذين الكتابين الذين صرف الاستاذ اكثر عمره الى تحشيتهما ... شرعت في جمع ما كتبه على هوامش الهداية وشرح اكمل الدين واسرعت الى تكميله وتتميمه بالتدوين ... ثم اعلم انه اذا ذكر قال المص ... فالمراد منه صاحب الهداية واذا ذكر قوله بالاحمر فالمراد منه الشارح اكمل الدين واذا ذكر اقول فالمراد منه الاستاذ المرحوم سعد الملة والدين ..."

10 V(100), VII (114), 15 V(264) ; almost exclusively quinions ; middle of the quire marks in the form of black strokes in the outer margin of the left-hand leaf (beginning with the second) ; page between the two sections left blank (p.229) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.


Written in 29 lines per page ; frame-ruled.


Naskh ; elegant, compact Ottoman hand [as well as possibly Iraqi or 'Syrian'?] in a medium line ; serifless with marked effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, pointing (two and three dots) mainly in conjoined dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed.


Simple illuminated 'headpiece' (ʻunwān) at opening on p.2 consisting of rectangular piece carrying the basmalah in gold tawqīʻ with gold flanking pieces and vocalization and accents in blue and gold, surmounted by an empty well ; keywords (قال المص, قوله, اقول) and section headings chrysographed, rubricated or in blue ; written area through p.20 surrounded by gold frame defined by black fillets, elsewhere surrounded by blue rule-border ; textual dividers in the form of gold, blue and red discs.


non-European (likely Arab) laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (20 in 25 mm., horizontal) and chain lines grouped in threes mainly with 9-11 mm. between chains and 32-40 mm. between groups (vertical), 14-17 mm. between chains and 44-52 mm. between groups also observed (see p.32) ; well-sized and burnished to glossy, sturdy, fairly transluscent.


Pasteboards covered in deep red leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; lower doublure in brown leather, upper pastedown / flyleaf (now affixed to opening leaf) in pale yellow paper ; upper and lower covers carry stamped and gold-painted scalloped mandorla (filled with vegetal composition, compare Déroche class. OAi 14) and tooled border in gold and black ; sewn in light-pink thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in light yellow and light pink, fair condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with significant staining and abrasion, lifting and losses of leather, etc. ; repairs to spine and board corners in bright red leather, including fill in lower cover.

As appears in colophon on p.524, copied by Muṣṭafá ibn ʻAbd al-Karīm (Mustafa bin Abdülkerim) with transcription of the latter section (al-niṣf al-thānī) completed in 983 [1575 or 6]. As appears in colophon on p.228, transcription of the opening section (and the entire manuscript) completed Rabīʻ II 984 [July 1576]. As explained by the copyist in the colophon for the opening section (p.228), he began the transcription with the second section but was delayed in completing the full work due to difficulty acquiring a copy of the first section from which he could make his copy.

Coll. Lib. 690713-156 Sulaiman 1968" ; occasional glosses and corrections.
