Collation:
V-1 (9), 5 V(59), III (65) ; Chiefly quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, presumably supplied during digitization.
Script:
Naskh ; compact, angular Egyptian hand in a medium line ; seriffed with blob or dot-like serifs (resembling the dots used for pointing) on most ascenders, slight effect of tilt to the left, mainly curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, alif maqṣūrah usually pointed as yāʼ ; extensively vocalized.
Decoration:
Headings, some keywords and text being commented upon rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red.
Support:
European laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 23-24 mm. apart (horizontal), three crescents watermark (75 mm. tall, parallel to chains, see p.28, 29, etc.), and "AD" countermark (see p.9, etc.) ; light cream in color, well-burnished to glossy, sturdy though quite crisp and fairly transluscent ; staining.
Binding:
Boards covered in dark green cloth with dark green leather over spine (quarter binding), serving as a custom wrapper or case in portfolio style with flaps extending from the edges of the lower board and cloth tape tie closure ; board linings and flap coverings in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents "شرح السعد للتصريف الزنجاني | J.H.D." ; sewing virtually gone (occasional trace of primaries in yellow), though originally in two stations, many bifolia split ; textblock dramatically and very unevenly trimmed (most of upper margin lost except where glosses present) and set into portfolio (now fitting large) ; overall in fairly good condition.
Origin:
As appears in colophon on pp.128-129, copied by Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn ʻAlī al-Qāhirī al-Azharī al-Shāfiʻī with transcription completed 6 Ramaḍān 1087 [November 1676].
Ownership and History:
On upper board lining, label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory number, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No 7781" ; UM Library inscription on label on upper board lining and on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-11-51 | 71955" ; ownership statement on 'title page' (p.1) in name of Ḥusayn [Ḥasan ?] al-Jarmī ( حسن الجرمي ) ; waqf statement framing colophon on p.129 dated 1287 [1869 or 70] ; possible former inventory mark in pencil on verso of final leaf (p.130) "231 / 53" ; glosses and marginal corrections.
