Summary:
Fine copy of al-Ghazālī's (d.1111) concise treatise of dogmatic theology, partly directed against the Bāṭinīyah (i.e. the Ismāʻīlīs), but primarily a defense of his own views on taʼwīl, and on tawātur and ijmāʻ as sources of religious knowledge (see Watt, "al-G̲H̲azālī" in EI2).

i, 3 V(30), i (originally), exclusively quinions ; now pulled / disbound with conjugate leaves divided ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes front flyleaf).
Script:
Naskh ; elegant Ottoman hand in a medium line ; mainly serifless with effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, final yāʼ often unpointed.
Binding:
Boards covered in black cloth ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves printed in a geometric design resembling a scale pattern in dark maroon ; cover gold stamped "فيصل التفرقة" ; pulled by conservation such that cover / case and sewing threads are housed in one envelope and text pages in two others (five leaves per slide / folder, three slides per envelope) with all envelopes in one larger envelope.
Origin:
As appears in colophon on p.62, copied by Muṣṭafá Ibrāhīm, khādim al-Ustādh al-Khalwatī, from a copy held in the Khedival Library (al-Kutubkhānah al-Khidīwīyah / الكتبخانة الخديوية ) in Darb al-Jamāmīz palace ( سراى درب الجماميز ) with transcription completed 23 Shaʻbān 1294 [ca. 2 September 1877].
Ownership and History:
On upper pastedown label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory numbers, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No. 7793" ; on incipit page (p.4) oval waqf seal impression in red ink with inscription "وقف لله تعالى ومقره بيت السجادة البكرية" in name of Bayt al-Sajjādah al-Bakrīyah (بيت السجادة البكرية) ; UM Library inscription on p.7 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; occasional marginal correction.
