i, 3 V(30), V-1 (39), i ; exclusively quinions ; pages between sections (corresponding to gatherings) left blank, with some serving as section 'title pages' (see pp.21, 41, 61) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
Script:
Ruqʻah ; quick, compact hand in a medium line ; serifless and freely ligatured with effect of inclination to the left and of words descending to baseline, mainly closed counters, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed ; opening leaves in a more carefully executed naskh with elements of ruqʻah.
Binding:
Boards covered in textured black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "الغائب المفقود للاشارات" ; sewn in heavy white thread, seemingly over two recessed cords (difficult to examine) ; overall in fairly good condition with minor abrasion at spine and board edges.
Origin:
Lacks dated scribal colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974).
Ownership and History:
On upper pastedown label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory number, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No. 7922" ; UM Library inscription on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; a few interlinear and marginal corrections in same red ink ; a few marginal glosses (see p.2 and p.25).
