Careful copy of an anonymous text on modern philosophy (possibly unfinished or in some intermediate stage of composition with some sections intended to stand alone) with a selection from the letters of ʻAbd al-Bahāʼ ʻAbbās Afandī (d.1921) bound in preceding it.

Physical Details:

Two distinct sections, each carrying a work, now bound together ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals in opening section carrying Min Makātīb ʻAbd al-Bahāʼ which has verso of each leaf left blank ; opening leaf of the text on modern philosophy mistakenly inserted after the opening leaf of the Bahai text (see p.3) ; pages between sections of second work (Madkhal al-falsafah al-ḥadīthah) left fully or partially blank to serve as 'title pages' (see pp.45, 65, 85, 105, 125, 145, 161 ), irregular internal pagination, Hindu-Arabic numerals, in some sections ; pagination in pencil (entire volume), Western numerals, supplied during digitization.


Written in mainly 16 and 26 lines per page.


Ruqʻah ; two quick, modern hands in a medium to bold line ; serifless and freely ligatured with mainly closed counters, slight effect of words descending to baseline, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots.

Each section in a distinct type of paper ; section carrying opening work mainly on a coated laid paper stamped "محل محمود محمد الوكيل وفرحات ابراهيم بمصر" with a few sheets of lined wove paper mixed in ; section carrying second work on lined / ruled wove paper.


Boards covered in dark green cloth with dark green leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "مدخل الفلسفة الحديثة | J.H.D." ; sewing difficult to examine ; stuck-on endbands (blue and white stripe) ; overall in fairly good condition.

Lacks dated colophon ; both texts likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and at some stage bound together for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974).

On upper pastedown label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory number, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No 7951" ; UM Library inscription on p.1 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; glosses and marginal corrections.
