Composite manuscript opening with Abū ʻAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Sanūsī's (d.1490) elucidation of the terms utilized in his treatise on the essentials of faith, Umm al-barāhīn, followed by Lawʻat al-shākī wa damʻat al-bāqī, al-Ṣafadī’s (d.1363) maqāmah in rhymed prose and verse on the pangs of love between young men, on the 'title page' here entitled Qiṣṣat al-shākī wa-lawʻāt al-bākī and attributed to Ibn Ḥajalah.

Physical Details:

i, 6 V(60), III+2 (68), i ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (mistakenly skips two pages between pp.121-122).


Written in 15 and 17 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board visible (see pp.19-20, 132-134 in particular).


Naskh ; two clear though somewhat awkward Egyptian hands, the opening hand in a bold line, the latter in a medium line ; opening hand supplying the first work (though p.19) large and serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, elongation of many descenders, many closed counters, pointing in distinct dots except for three dots (represented by a curved stroke resembling an inverted comma), alif maqṣūrah usually pointed as yāʼ ; hand supplying second work (from p.21) small and seriffed with right sloping head-serifs on most ascenders, curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, alif maqṣūrah usually pointed as yāʼ ; replacement section (pp.41-60) in still a different hand, awkward, large, elongated and somewhat flattened in the horizontal.

European laid paper of three different types, each section in a distinct type ; opening section (carrying first work) in a type with 7 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 26-29 mm. apart (vertical), and three crescents watermark (perpendicular to chains, see pp.6, 8, 14, etc.), quite sturdy, dark cream in color, well-burnished, minor ink burn ; second section (carrying second work) mainly in a type with 6-7 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 25 mm. apart (vertical), and watermarks of three crescents (perpendicular to chains, see pp.26, 82, 86, 90, etc.) and possibly crown-star-crescent (see p.108, etc.), sturdy, medium cream in color, well-burnished ; replacement section (pp.41-60) in still another type with three crescents watermark (see pp.48, 50, 52).


Boards covered in textured black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "متن السنوسي متن الحقائق ولوعة الشاكي" ; sewn in white thread over three recessed cords ; overall in fairly good condition with minor abrasion.
