Written mainly in 17 lines per page, written area occasionally divided to columns ; frame-ruled.


Naskh ; clear, spacious Egyptian hand in a medium line ; mainly serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, pointing mainly in distinct dots but three dots represented by curved stroke, occasional vocalization, alif maqṣūrah often pointed as yāʼ.


Keywords, section headings, and abbreviation symbols (mainly two-teeth stroke overlining keywords) rubricated ; diagrams.


European laid paper with 7-8 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 23-24 mm. apart (vertical), and crown-star-crescent watermark (see p.24, 36, etc.) ; well-burnished to glossy, cream in color, fairly thick and sturdy.


Pasteboards covered in paper printed with shell 'marbled' design in blue, dark blue, red, and yellow with red leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in untinted wove paper ; resewn in white thread, two stations ; overall in somewhat poor condition with abrasion, lifting and losses of paper and leather, delamination of boards, etc. ; fully detached from textblock.

Lacks dated colophon though dated ownership statement on 'title page' (p.1) provides a rough terminus ante quem of 1775 and number of prior owners, paper, hand, etc. would suggest early to mid-18th or even late 17th century.

Ownership and History:

On front flyleaf, label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory numbers, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No.7779" ; several former owners' marks on 'title page' (p.1) including ownership statement in name of Aḥmad al-Sinnārī [al-Sanārī] al-Mālikī [?] ( احمد السناري المالكي ) accompanied by oval seal impression, ownership statement in name of Aḥmad Abū Ḥāfiẓ al-Qalʻī al-Ḥanafī ( احمد ابو حافظ القلعي الحنفي ) accompanied by octagonal seal impression, ownership / purchase statement (with price) in name of the aforementioned owner's son Nuʻmān ibn al-marḥūm al-Shaykh Aḥmad al-Qalʻī al-Ḥanafī ( نعمان بن المرحوم الشيخ احمد القلعي الحنفي ) dated 15 Rabīʻ I 1189 [May 1775], and partially illegible statement in name of Aḥmad al-Bujayrimī al-Shāfiʻī ( احمد البجيرمي الشافعي ) dated 1190 [1776 or 7] ; kabīkaj invocation on 'title page' (p.1) "لبيك كبيكج" ; UM Library inscription on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; glosses and occasional marginal corrections.
