Script:
Naskh ; bold, clear Egyptian or Yemeni [?] hand ; very slight effect of tilt to the left, occasionally more apparent ; mainly serifless though occasional right-sloping headserifs appear irregularly on free-standing alif, lām, etc. ; many open counters ; pointing in distinct dots, liberally spaced ; alif maqṣūrah pointed as yāʼ and often mardūdah ; descenders tending toward rectilinear ; rightward descenders tapered ; kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred, with even final kāf bearing shaqq ; occasional free assimilation of some letters ; partially vocalized.
Decoration:
Section headings and text being commented upon (text of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī) rubricated (pp.362-367 lack rubrics) ; letters of section headings of elongated ; textual dividers in the form of red discs.
Support:
European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 22 mm. apart (vertical), and crown star crescent watermark with 'A D' countermark ; thick and well-burnished to glossy ; some staining.
Binding:
Both upper and lower covers lost, though spine remains intact ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; worked endbands in pink and lime green, intact ; overall in poor condition with covers lost, lifting and losses to spine leather, abrasion and staining of outermost leaves of textblock, etc. ; housed in box for protection.
Ownership and History:
Bookplate of British Museum, London on opening leaf (p.1), "British Museum, London. No. 56. Hadith (Traditions) of Kastallani." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "73" in Western numerals on opening leaf (p.1) ; on blue-tinted paper once pasted on opening leaf and now at opening (p.5), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا على ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الملتصق بداري الا لعلماء سكنوا بارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; occasional marginal corrections.
