Physical Details:
Collation:
i, 2 V(20), IV (28), 6 V(88), IV+1 (97), 15 V(247), IV (255), II+1 (260), i ; chiefly quinions ; catchwords present ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves and insert, skips two pages each between pp.281-282 and pp.285-286).
Script:
Naskh ; a fine Eastern Turkish (Anatolian) or 'Syrian' hand ; serifless with effect of tilt to the right, exaggerated thickness and elongation of horizontal strokes, many closed counters, pointing mainly in distinct dots, some free assimilation of letters, kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred (even final kāf), final alif curves to the right.
Decoration:
Section headings and keywords rubricated ; written area surrounded by red rule-border.
Support:
European laid paper with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 32 mm. apart (horizontal), and anchor in circle with star above watermark (see p.6, etc.) ; crisp and sturdy, well-burnished to glossy ; some staining.
Binding:
Pasteboards now covered in green-blue paper-backed cloth over dark brown leather with tan leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap though envelop flap now lost) ; board linings in dull yellow paper ; sewn in dark pink thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in cream and dull pink, damaged ; overall in poor condition with envelope flap lost, lifting and losses of cloth (particularly at spine), abrasion, staining, etc. ; housed in box for protection.
Former Shelfmarks:
From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 91 V" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip in Isl. Ms. 463 v.2).
Origin:
As appears in colophon on p.512, transcription completed in the second tenth of Jumādá I 958 [1551] or 998 [1590]. The second numeral of the date may have been tampered with as it appears that the numeral ٥ covers what may be a numeral ٩ ; it is conceivable that the copyist mistakenly repeated the initial numeral ٩ and then made a correction, or that another person made this change.
